(Washington, DC) – Breakout Lacrosse and the DC Lacrosse Association are proud to present the 5th Annual Breakout Lacrosse DC Classic on Saturday, March 16, at Wilson High School in NW Washington DC.
The Breakout Lacrosse DC Classic consists of games featuring nine boys’ varsity lacrosse teams from the Nation’s Capital— Georgetown Day, Gonzaga, Sidwell Friends, St. John’s, St. Albans, KIPP DC, School Without Walls, Maret and Wilson High School—along with invited guest Eleanor Roosevelt High School from Greenbelt, Maryland. The event is sponsored and directed by Breakout Lacrosse, one of the DC Metropolitan area’s fastest growing boys’ and girls’ lacrosse training companies.
The schedule of games is as follows:
2013 Breakout Lacrosse DC Classic Schedule
9:00 Eleanor Roosevelt HS vs. Georgetown Day School
11:00 KIPP DC vs. School Without Walls
1:00 Gonzaga vs. St. Albans
3:00 St. Johns vs. Sidwell Friends
5:00 Maret vs. Wilson
The previous Breakout Lacrosse DC Lacrosse Classics were held at St. Albans, Wilson, Catholic University and Gonzaga respectively, with attendance ranging from 500 to more than 1,500 fans at the four previous events.
Last year’s event at Gonzaga College High School had over 1,000 fans throughout the day. Fans were treated to very competitive lacrosse games highlighted by the coin toss in the final game by former St. Albans Coach, Malcolm Lester. Coach Lester and Gonzaga head coach, Casey O’Neil, were the minds behind this event five years ago. Last year marked the end of Coach Lester’s tenure as chairman of the DC Lacrosse Association as he took a position as headmaster at Grace Episcopal Day School in Kensington, MD. Coach Lester will be missed, but his idea of a city wide lacrosse competition is not only going strong in its 5th year, but it is growing with the addition of 2 public charter school teams participating this year (KIPP DC and School Without Walls).
DC Classic Director and Breakout Lacrosse Co-Founder, Matt Breslin commented, “The Breakout Lacrosse DC Lacrosse Classic has gained momentum each year, and having 2 new teams this year is the highlight for me. We will certainly see great lacrosse on the field, but those 2 teams joining us this year is a testament to the growth of the sport in this city and we could not be more excited to have KIPP DC and School Without Walls participate this year!”
Admission to the DC Lacrosse Classic is free for students high school age and younger and $5 for adults. Tickets may be purchased at the gate. Commemorative DC Lacrosse Classic t-shirts, listing all participating schools, will be sold, along with game programs. Concessions will also be sold throughout the day by the Wilson Lacrosse Booster Club.
Proceeds from the DC Lacrosse Classic will benefit WINNERS Lacrosse (The Washington Inner City Lacrosse Foundation), a nonprofit organization that was started in October 2000. WINNERS provides Washington, DC boys and girls from historically underserved neighborhoods the opportunity to learn the game of lacrosse and the life skills associated with playing a team sport. WINNERS Lacrosse uses the game as a vehicle to teach life skills that will give young boys and girls the tools to be successful on and off the field. Please go to www.winnerslacrosse.org to learn more about this great organization and how to support it.
“The Breakout Lacrosse DC Classic is a terrific event. Our kids get fired up each year to participate and to get together with all the teams in the district to celebrate DC Lacrosse,” said Purple Eagles head coach Casey O’Neill, current head of the DC Lacrosse Association. “We are looking forward to a great day of lacrosse at a great venue (Wilson HS) to kick off the 2013 spring season!”
