Robert Morris University Adds Lacrosse Video Game Founder Carlo Sunseri To Staff

Moon Township, Pa. – Robert Morris University men’s lacrosse head coach Andrew McMinn announced Monday the promotion of Kee Joe Song to assistant coach and the hiring of Carlo Sunseri as a volunteer assistant coach. Song will be in his second season with RMU after he served as a volunteer assistant with the squad in 2011.

Sunseri will be returning to Robert Morris for his second coaching stint with the program. Sunseri was an assistant coach for two seasons after he previously played for the Colonials in their first three years of existence.

While working in a collegiate capacity for the first time in 2011, Song oversaw the Colonials’ face-off corps and also was responsible for controlling the box in addition to aiding the staff in a variety of other areas. Song helped Mike Grosz (St. Louis, Mo. / Parkway West), the Colonials’ primary choice at the ‘X’, to win nearly 54 percent of his faceoffs last season.

Although 2011 was his first year in the college ranks, Song had already served as a head coach at the high school level, the club level and in international competition.

Song was formerly the head coach of the Swiss national team at the 2010 World Lacrosse Championships in Manchester, England. Prior to his term as a national team coach, Song was the head coach for the Hamburg Warriors, a club team that competes in the German Bundesliga, for one year.

Before journeying overseas, Song served as head coach at his alma mater, Mount Lebanon Senior High School, for four seasons. His teams were the Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (WPSLA) champions in each of his first three seasons before capturing the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League championship in his final season. Song’s 2007 squad was also a Pennsylvania state finalist. During his high-school coaching career, Song coached nine All-Americans and 27 first team all-league players.

Song was a four-year starter and a two-year captain as a midfielder for Mt. Lebanon. He was a two-time All-WPSLA First Team honoree and was also named to the All-Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association First Team in 1998.

In his most recent season coaching for RMU, Sunseri helped the Colonials to their first winning season in school history courtesy of a five-win improvement from the prior year, including a thrilling double-overtime victory over Penn State.

Prior to joining the coaching staff, Sunseri spent time working for Major League Lacrosse in Boston where he compiled press releases and helped organize interviews.

After transferring to RMU from Providence, Sunseri was a significant contributor to the young Robert Morris program. He was a three-year captain and also claimed the Colonials’ Iron Man award in each of his three seasons as well. Despite not playing four years at Robert Morris, Sunseri still currently ranks eighth in all-time points (59) at RMU. He is also among the career top 10 in goals per game (.9), assists (24) and shots (131) for the Colonials and ended his career on a 19-game point streak. In his senior season, Sunseri tallied 19 goals and seven assists along with 12 ground balls in 12 games and was named as the team’s most valuable player.

Sunseri also formerly operated Pittsburgh Lacrosse Academy where he taught the game to youth players from around the region.

Sunseri earned his bachelor’s degree from Robert Morris in sport management in 2007.

Song and Sunseri will join third-year assistant coach Dan Mulford in assisting McMinn in 2012. Mulford was a four-year starter for the Colonials and still sits fourth in career caused turnovers for RMU and is also among the all-time top 10 in games played for Robert Morris. Bill Leiendecker will serve as the program’s Director of Operations in 2012.

Robert Morris is set to open its 2012 campaign Saturday, Feb. 11, at Bellarmine, the first of four consecutive games away from home to start the year for the Colonials.
