University of Tampa Spartans Weather the Storm With Win Against Coker College

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The University of Tampa (3-0, 2-0) lacrosse team extends its win streak to three games to start the season with a 10-4 win against Coker College. Coker drops to 1-3 on the season.

It took less than two minutes for the Spartans to score, with A.J. DeSimone putting up his team leading fifth of the season. With four minutes remaining in the first quarter Joel McGowan added to the lead with his second of the year, with Kevin Castle getting the assist.

The second period started off like the first, with DeSimone netting his second of the game. Moment’s later junior attackman Kyle Hemrick scored the put UT up 4-0.

The first half came to an end with Mike Tyrrell scoring, giving the Spartans a five goal lead.

Tampa’s potent offensive attack picked up where it left off, as M.J. Lorenzo scored his second goal of the season. Another goal by Hemrick later in the period gave the Spartans its season high lead of seven goals in a game.

Before the third quarter ended, the Cobra’s scored twice with goals from Ryan Vento and John Bretton.

Keith LaClair for Coker got scoring started in the fourth, cutting the lead to 7-3. However, Hemrick tallied his third of the game shortly after to put Tampa back up by five.

CC answered quickly with its fourth of the game scored by Timothy Smith.

Despite four second half goals by the Cobras, the Spartans registered two more of its own to seal a rain soaked victory away from home. DeSimone scored the ninth goal and Jonathan Franzese the tenth.

Hemrick and DeSimone both had hat tricks, while goaltender Joseph Fiorucci recorded 12 saves. DeSimone also added two assists on the day, with captain Eric Dance recording a team high of six groundballs.

Tampa heads to Savannah, Ga. to face Belmont Abbey College on Sunday at 1 p.m. for a neutral site game at SCAD. Live stats will be available through TampaSpartans.com.
