Holy Cross Men’s Lacrosse Drops Season-Opener to St. John’s 17-7

QUEENS, N.Y. – Kieran McArdle posted three goals and five assists for eight points, while, Blair Bonner tallied three goals and four assists for seven points for the Red Storm as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team fell to St. John’s, 17-7, in the season-opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field in non-conference action. With the loss, the Crusaders start the season 0-1 overall, while the Red Storm begin 1-0 overall.

Senior Matt Boylan (Kings Park, N.Y.) led the Crusaders with two goals. Junior James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) posted one goal and one assist for two points.

After the Red Storm scored the first three goals of the game, Boylan found the back of the net to make it a 3-1 contest. St. John’s netted the last two goals of the first quarter for a 5-1 advantage. The Red Storm posted the first six goals of the second quarter to increase their lead to 11-1. After senior Andrew Morici (Manhasset, N.Y.) tallied a goal off a pass by Kennedy on a man-up opportunity, Colin Keegan scored his own man-up goal as St. John’s took a 12-2 lead to the half.

Kennedy scored his first goal of the season to make it a 12-3 game in the third quarter, but Kevin Cernuto answered for the Red Storm as the score was 13-3 going to the fourth quarter. The Crusaders netted the first two goals of the fourth quarter as junior John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored off a pass from sophomore John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.) and freshman Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) posted his first collegiate goal to make the score 13-5. After the Red Storm increased their lead to 15-5, Boylan netted his second goal of the contest. St. John’s then scored two straight goals and senior Ricky DeCicco (Manhasset, N.Y.) tallied a goal for the Crusaders for the 17-7 final.

Sophomore goalie Will Cummings (Summit, N.J.) posted six saves in his collegiate debut, while Jeff Lowman earned the win for the Red Storm as Lowman and Ryan Quinn combined for 17 saves. The Crusaders outshot the Red Storm, 48-32. St. John’s posted 33 ground balls and Holy Cross tallied 29. The Red Storm won 17 face-offs and the Crusaders took 10, while St. John’s went 17-21 on clear attempts and Holy Cross went 12-12. The Crusaders went 1-7 on extra-man opportunities and the Red Storm went 6-8.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they travel to West Hartford, Conn., to meet Hartford at Yousuf Al-Marzook Field at 1:00 p.m.
