Game Highlights: Cohen Propels Harvard Lacrosse Past Brown with 5 Goals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Jeff Cohen tallied five goals for the second straight game, including the game-winning score at the 2:19 mark of overtime, to propel the Harvard men’s lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over Brown before 1,116 fans at Harvard Stadium Saturday evening.

With the win, the Crimson improves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the Ancient Eight, while the Bears slip to 2-3 and 0-1 in the Ancient Eight.

In the extra session, Harvard goalie Jake Gambitsky recorded a save at the 3:09 mark, and Stephen Jahelka grabbed possession for the Crimson as he picked up a ground ball. With 2:19 left in the first overtime, Kevin Vaughan sent a pass to Cohen for the game-winning score, giving Harvard the sudden victory.

Carl Zimmerman added two goals and two assists for four points, while Daniel Eipp tallied two scores and dished out an assist for the Crimson. Gambitsky finished with six saves for Harvard, while Brown goalie Will Round recorded nine stops.

Cohen got Harvard started with a goal at 2:14 of the first period, tying the score, 1-1. In the second, Zimmerman tallied a score at 13:51, but Brown netted the next two goals to take a 4-2 advantage. With 2:05 remaining in the half, Zimmerman sent a pass to Daniel Eipp, who found the back of the net, pulling Harvard within one score, 4-3, before halftime. Despite trailing on the scoreboard, Harvard led in shots, 17-8, after the first 30 minutes.

After Brown opened up a 5-3 lead, Eipp and Zimmerman tallied goals in the third at 11:07 and 9:04, respectively, to knot the game, 5-5. The teams continued trading goals, as Terry White stole a pass in the Brown zone and fired for a score to tie the game, 6-6, with 3:06 left in the third.

With 12:48 remaining in the fourth, Vaughan found Cohen for his second goal of the game, pulling Harvard back within one, 8-7. Cohen tacked on another score at the 9:01 mark, as the Crimson and Bears were tied, 8-8. Less than two minutes later, Cohen netted his third straight goal, giving Harvard a 9-8 advantage at 7:43. Brown tied the game again, 9-9, with 5:40 remaining, forcing overtime.

Keegan Michel won 15-of-23 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls for the Crimson, while John Rose grabbed four ground balls. Harvard outshot Brown, 38-23, earned an edge in ground balls, 28-21, and owned an edge in faceoffs won, 15-8.

Harvard will remain at home to host Dartmouth Saturday, March 24 at 2 p.m.
