POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Keegan Wilkinson has announced the addition of nine student-athletes who will join the Red Foxes as members of the class of 2016. The new Red Foxes – who hail from either New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania – includes four midfielders, three attack men and two defensemen.
“We are thrilled to welcome the newest members of the Marist College lacrosse program,” Wilkinson said. “This accomplished group of young men along with our returning players will strive to take the Marist lacrosse program to new heights. This particular group is filled with well-rounded young men that have seen success both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field. We are very much looking forward to their arrival on campus and know they will be tremendous additions to the Marist College community.”
Ryan Cook – 6-1 / 175 – Midfield – Montclair, N.J. / Montclair
Cook will join the Red Foxes after playing for Montclair High School in Montclair, N.J. The midfielder finished with 56 points on 35 goals and 21 assists while scooping up 24 ground balls as a senior. For his career he registered 83 points on 53 goals and 30 assists. A captain in his final year, Cook was named First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-State. He also played three years of football and one year of basketball and made the academic honor roll. His father played football at Colgate.
Dominic Montemurro – 5-9 / 170 – Midfield – Kings Park, N.Y. / Kings Park
Montemurro is arguable to most versatile of the class, He scored more than 100 goals in his career, collected nearly 600 ground balls and had a 73% success rate in face-offs. In his senior campaign, Montemurro scored 35 goals to go along with 24 assists for 59 points. He also scooped up 174 ground balls and won 74% of his face-offs. A two-year captain, he was selected to the All-County Team his junior and senior seasons after being named to the All-Division team as a sophomore. He was also a decorated member of the wrestling and football teams. Academically, Montemurro was a member of the High Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and was a National Scholar Athlete. His older brother Joe played lacrosse at Hofstra.
Shane Murphy – 6-1 / 175 – Midfield – Syracuse, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy
Murphy scored 16 goals and had 10 assists as a senior at Christian Brothers Academy to complete a career where he registered 88 points on 52 goals and 36 assists. He also collected 146 ground balls in his four years on the varsity lacrosse team. He also played three years of varsity hockey and one year of varsity football. A two-year captain, Murphy was named an Under Armour Underclassman All Star. Off the field he was a member of the National Honors Society. His brother Ty plays on the Towson lacrosse team. His father David played basketball at Clarkson and his step-mom played basketball at Le Moyne.
Joseph Radin – 6-1 / 178 – Attack – Long Beach, N.Y. / Long Beach
Radin scored 51 goals and dished out 31 assists in his senior season at Long Beach High School. He was a member of the All-Conference Team as a sophomore and selected to the All-Country team after his junior and senior seasons. For his career, Radin registered over 200 points, scoring 146 goals and assisting on 72 others. A member of the Nassau County Showcase Team, Radin has also played hockey, football, and soccer. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and is an Honor Roll student.
Dillon Walker – 5-10 / 175 – Attack – Wawa, Pa. / Salesianum (Del.)
Walker, from Wawa, Pa., attended Salesianum in Delaware where he was a four year starter and won three state championships. The 2012 Delaware Player of the Year and a two-time U.S. Lacrosse All-American, Walker led his team for the third straight year with 49 goals and had 47 assists as a senior. For his career, Walker scored more than 165 goals and assisted on over 150 others for more than 300 points. A three-time member of the student council, Walker has also been named to Salesianum’s academic honor roll each of the past three years.
Derek Sganga – 5-9 / 165 – LSM/Defense – Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport South Manor Jr./Sr. High School / Avon Old Farms School
Derek Sganga was a four year varsity starter for Eastport South Manor Jr./Sr. High School where, for his career, he recorded 14 goals, 13 assists, 246 ground balls and 106 takeaways. He is the all-time school leader in goals, assists, and takeaways for defensemen. After helping his team to reach the playoffs for the first time in 2010 , and the school’s first playoff victory in that same year, Sganga was named a Team Captain for the 2011 season. He has been named All-Division and All-County for both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He was named to the academic honor roll from 2007-10 and was a Scholar Athletics from 2008-10. Sganga played the 2012 season at Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut where he scored seven goals and recorded five assistes while collecting 107 ground balls and causing 39 turnovers. He was named the team’s Defensive MVP and earned All-New England honors. His brother Ron played lacrosse at Manhattanville College.
Bruce Bainbridge – 5-8 / 170 – LSM/Defense – Montclair, N.J. / Montclair
Bainbridge recorded two assists and had a team-leading 80 groundballs for Montclair High School, where he was a teammate with fellow classmate Ryan Cook. An Under Armour All-American Underclassman in 2011, Bainbridge was also an All-Essex County First Team selection, an All-N.J. Junior Team Third Team selection, and received an All-State Group IV honorable mention. In addition to lacrosse, Bainbridge also played ice hockey player for Montclair. His father Bob played football for Siena and was named an All-American in 1973.
Nick Papayanakos – 5-7 / 145 – Attack – Manlius, N.Y. – Christian Brothers Academy
Nick Papayanakos played attack at Christian Brothers Academy alongside fellow incoming freshman Shane Murphy. As a senior, Papayanakos scored 43 goals and chipped in 15 assists while being named to the All-CNY Team for a second time. He was also named an Under Armour Under Classman All-American following his junior campaign. For his career he recorded 103 goals and 75 assists. Papayanakos was also a member his school’s ice hockey and soccer teams.
Tommy Celmer – 6-0 / 172 – Midfield – Summit, N.J. / Summitt
Celmar scored 18 goals and assisted on 20 others while picking up 72 ground balls in his senior season, helping his team to a New Jersey Group 1 State Championship and a semifinal finish in the NJSIAAA Tournament of Champions. A team captain in 2012, Celmar was an All-Group 1 First Team member For his career he registered 70 points on 34 goals and 36 assists and scooped 165 ground balls. He was a member of both the 2010 and 2011 New Jersey Group 2 State Championship teams which set a New Jersey record with a 68-game winning streak.
Marist finished their 2012 season at 6-8 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC, advancing to their third consecutive MAAC Tournament.
