New London, CT – The United States Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse team is excited to announce the arrival of a strong in-coming group that is part of the Class of 2016. The Bears were challenged to fill several positions vacated by graduating 1st Class cadets now serving in the fleet, but a successful recruiting season seems likely to fill the gaps. Thirteen new cadets round out the list from ten different states all across the country. The incoming class arrived on R-Day June 25, 2012 and is currently at the Coast Guard Academy having completed Swab Summer indoctrination.
General Manager LCDR Daniel Ursino said, “We are very excited at the level of talent and athleticism of this year’s incoming class. We were able to find a great group of driven and accomplished student-athletes from all over the country to push our returners and make an immediate impact on the field.”
“The goal for this year’s recruiting class, as always, was to find quality young men to serve in the Coast Guard. Our next goal was to add overall depth to our team while bringing up the skill level,” said Ursino. “As a coaching staff we feel like we have far exceeded those goals.”
“This is a group of well-rounded student athletes that possess the character, work-ethic and hunger to represent the Coast Guard Academy, serve their country and become Commissioned Officers in the United States Coast Guard. We are very excited that they and their families have agreed to join the Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse family.”
This year’s recruiting class has the ability to produce immediate impact players for this upcoming year. These thirteen talented incoming fourth-class cadets will join a Bears team that lost six players to graduation from last year’s squad. Coast Guard (11-5, 3-1 PL) made it to the PCLL Division 2 title game, but lost to Briarcliffe College 9-8 in overtime. The Bears finished the season ranked No. 17 nationally in the MCLA D2 Nike/Inside Lacrosse Coaches Poll.
Head Coach Gary Weller notes, “We are very excited about adding talent and athleticism to our core of returning players. We will have a nice combination of senior leadership and talented underclassmen that can take our program to the top of the PCLL.”
