Mountain Hawks drop 15-10 final to Air Force — More D1 Men’s Results


AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The #8/12 Lehigh men’s lacrosse team wrapped up a tough trip to Colorado on Sunday with a 15-10 defeat at a surging Air Force squad. Part of the Frontier Airlines Face-Off Classic, the game was delayed and moved from the University of Denver to Air Force’s indoor facility due to a snowstorm Saturday night into Sunday. Sophomore Dan Taylor led the way with a career-high five points while seniors Dante Fantoni and David DiMaria posted four points apiece. Lehigh will look to bounce back on Saturday when it returns home to host VMI at 2:30 p.m.

#18 Syracuse Tops Army In Defensive Showdown
Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Somers stood tall with a career-high 18 saves, but the Army lacrosse team did not have an answer on the offensive end in a 6-2 loss at #18 Syracuse on Sunday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. Sophomore attackman John Glesener and junior middie Tyler Kamide accounted for the Black Knights’ goals, but the Orange defense held the rest of the team in check all afternoon en route its first win of the season.

#11 Denver uses strong second half to surge past #8/12 Lehigh
The #8/12 Lehigh men’s lacrosse team took a 7-6 halftime lead at #11 Denver, but the Pioneers exploded for 12 second-half goals to down the Mountain Hawks, 18-10 in the Frontier Face-Off Classic. Sophomore Dan Taylor posted his first-career hat trick, and an assist for a career-high four points, while senior David DiMaria dished four assists. Lehigh will return to action in less than 24 hours when it faces an Air Force squad which improved to 3-1 after beating Canisius on Saturday.

Maryland’s Runs Too Much For Men’s Lacrosse In 12-10 Loss
After top-ranked Loyola University Maryland scored the first goal in both the first and second halves, the University of Maryland used runs of 5-0 and 3-0 to gain control of the scoreboard, and the second-ranked Terrapins finished off a 12-10 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex in front of 5,781 fans.

Holy Cross Men’s Lacrosse Downs Hartford 11-9
Senior Myles Gillespie (Rye, N.Y.) totaled two goals and two assists, to lead the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory over Hartford at the Hart Turf Field. The Crusaders improve to 1-1 on the season with the win, while the Hawks fall to 0-2 overall.

Fourth-Quarter Surge Pushes Hawks Past VMI Lacrosse 10-3
It was a two-goal game early in the fourth quarter, but the Virginia Military Institute lacrosse team fell victim to a five-goal surge over the final nine minutes of its game against the Saint Joseph’s University Hawks, falling 10-3 Saturday afternoon at Finnesey Field.

Second-Half Run Sinks Leopards
A string of nine straight Manhattan goals from the second to fourth quarters doomed the Lafayette men’s lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in Riverdale, N.Y. as it fell to the Jaspers, 11-7.

Titans Tripped Up At Robert Morris
Despite a pair of goals from juniors Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, Ont. / Denis Morris) and Alex Maini (Lynbrook, N.Y. / Lynbrook), the Detroit men’s lacrosse team could not get the offense going as the Titans dropped a 9-5 contest at Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon.

St. John’s 10, Yale 9
One game can really make a difference. That may have been most evident today as the Bulldogs opened their 2013 season against a Red Storm team that had worked out its kinks in a regular-season win last week on the road. No. 17 Yale had trouble finishing and grabbing ground balls at crucial times while dropping its men’s lacrosse season opener at St. John’s, 10-9.

Harvard Men’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 7/5 UMass in Season Opener, 8-6
Senior Harry Krieger made 13 saves in goal and classmate Alex White turned in a hat trick as the Harvard men’s lacrosse team dropped its season opener to No. 7/5 UMass Saturday afternoon, 8-6.

No. 6 Virginia Outlasts Stony Brook on Long Island, 13-7
Mark Cockerton scored five goals and the No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers (3-0) outlasted the Stony Brook Seawolves (1-2) on Saturday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Virginia held a narrow one-goal lead going into the intermission, 6-5, but the Cavalier defense clamped and limited Stony Brook to only four shots in the second half.

HPU men’s lacrosse takes road loss at Bellarmine
The High Point University men’s lacrosse team took a 12-5 loss at Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Ky. Sophomore Matt Thistle scored two goals and freshman Bryce Parietti had one goal and one assist.

Quinnipiac Rallies For 9-7 Win Over Brown In Season Opener
Quinnipiac junior goalie Gill Connors made 20 saves to stymie Brown’s offense, leading the Bobcats to a 9-7 win over the Bears at Stevenson Field in the season opening game for both teams.
