New London, Conn. – The #7 U.S. Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse team swept its weekend set of games with a 22-9 win over the University of New Haven on Friday night and a 14-3 win over Bridgewater State University on Sunday morning. With the wins, the Blue and Orange advance to 7-1, 2-0 in the PCLL South.
The Bears used a 12-0 run against New Haven in the second and third periods to run away with the game after a 4-2 first period. During the stretch, nine different Bears tallied a goal, including pairs from Cadet 3/c Patrick Dreiss (Wantagh, NY/ Holy Trinity) and Cadet 2/c Paul Dell’isola (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep).
Cadet 2/c Stu Carley (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor) led the way for Coast Guard, matching his season-high of five points for the third time on three goals and two assists. Also, Cadet 2/c E. J. Schmid (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) and 1/c Austin English (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) had themselves a fine day with four points on two goals and two assists.
Coast Guard ripped off 60 shots over the course of the game, compared to 18 shots from UNH. UNH, though, grabbed the edge in face-offs, winning 18 out of 33 attempts.
Cadet 1/c Justin Dougherty (Satellite Beach, FL/Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy) made six saves for the Bears and allowed only two goals in the win.
On Sunday against Bridgewater State, Coast Guard went on a 9-0 run that started in the second period to take control of a 5-2 game.
Up 2-0 after the first period, Coast Guard used a 7-2 run in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 9-2 lead. The Bears didn’t look back after halftime, scoring five goals in the second half to take home a 14-3 win.
A pair of juniors, Cadet 2/c Stu Carley (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor) and Cadet 2/c Paul Dell’isola (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep), led the Bears offensive charge with four goals each – Carley added an assist. Also, Cadet 2/c E. J. Schmid (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) and 4/c Justin Huemme (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn) each chipped in with three points (1g, 2a) and (2g, 1a) respectively.
Coast Guard dominated the faceoff x with Cadet 1/c Steven Danseglio (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip), 3/c Nick Chicoine (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and 4/c Kyle Carosotto (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) going a combined 14-for-18. Chicoine went 3-3 at the x and Danseglio added a goal and an assist .
1/c Michael Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Boy’s Latin) made eight saves and picked up six groundballs in the win for the Bears. 2/c Nick Fredericksen (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) played exceptionally well throughout and led the team with seven groundballs. The poles were “on the offensive” again as Cadet 1/c James Fennessey (Milton, Mass./Milton) scored on a nice fast-break effort.
Coast Guard will be back in action on Sunday, April 14th at 1:00 PM in the friendly confines of Cadet Memorial Stadium taking on #13 ranked Briarcliffe College (2-3, 1-0).
