The announcement of a lacrosse league by the Big 10 Conference, beginning play in 2015, will have an impact on Fairfield University men’s lacrosse.

The Stags compete in the ECAC Lacrosse League, which currently has six members including the University of Michigan and Ohio State University. The Wolverines and Buckeyes will compete in the ECAC in 2014 before leaving for the newly formed league.

“Fairfield is proud to have played a role in helping elevate the ECAC Lacrosse League to its place as one of the top leagues in the nation,” said Fairfield Director of athletics Eugene P. Doris. “We look forward to competing for the 2014 ECAC crown and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

“Andy Copelan has done an excellent job during his tenure in helping put our program into the national conversation,” Doris continued. “Fairfield is committed to continuing that ascent and will explore all options available to secure our place amongst the upper tier of Division I lacrosse.”

The Stags have won 27 league games during their eight seasons in the ECAC and have qualified for each of the league’s three postseason tournaments the past three seasons.

Copelan has completed five seasons at the helm of the Stags, posting a 43-31 mark in that time. Fairfield has had three players earn USILA All-America honors in the past two seasons and has had the Stags equal the program’s best national ranking, 13th, in those two seasons.
