With opening day a little more than two months away, the Princeton men’s lacrosse team has announced its three captains for 2014 and a major change to the schedule.
Seniors Derick Raabe, Tom Schreiber and Jack Strabo will be Princeton’s captains this coming season. Schreiber, the first-team All-America and Tewaaraton Trophy finalist, will be a captain for the second straight season.
Raabe started every game on defense last year, when he was a second-team All-Ivy selection, after being a longstick midfielder for most of his first two seasons. Raabe’s 73 ground balls were the most by a Princeton player since 1997.
Schreiber has been a first-team All-America the last two years and a first-team All-Ivy selection each of his first three years. He is already Princeton’s career leader for points by a midfielder with 149 (76G, 73A), and he enters this season with the chance to become the first Princeton player ever with at least 90 goals and 90 assists in his career.
Strabo has been a first-line shortstick defensive midfielder since his freshman year and is one of the most reliable SSDMs the Tigers have ever had. He has also been an Academic All-Ivy League selection.
Princeton’s game with Johns Hopkins has been switched from M&T Bank Stadium on Baltimore to Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. The day is also different, as the game will be held on Saturday, March 1, at noon. It was actually be the opener of a doubleheader, with the women’s game against Georgetown to follow that day at 3.
Princeton opens its season Feb. 22 at home against Hofstra.
In addition, Schreiber will also serve as an assistant coach for the Ugandan national team for the 2014 World Championships in Denver.
“I am grateful Team Uganda reached out and asked me to serve as its offensive coordinator for the World Championship this summer,” Schreiber said. “The team is made up of highly motivated individuals that love the game of lacrosse. Their love for the game is inspiring and their work ethic is off the charts. I am honored to be associated with this group and behind excited to see what they can do on the big stage.”
Schreiber has been invovled with lacrosse in Uganda through the Fields of Growth organization.
