Army’s Garrett Thul Breaks All-Time Goals Record In 12-1 Win Over Michigan; More D1 Results


MIAMI, Fla. – Senior attackman Garrett Thul led all players with seven goals en route to breaking Army’s all-time goals record in a 12-1 win over Michigan on Saturday night. Playing in the marquee game of the second Orange Bowl Lacrosse Classic at Sun Life Stadium, Thul’s effort brought his career total to 141 career goals and broke Scott Finlay’s mark, which was set from 1975-78.

Pioneers Top Quakers 15-12 for Third Straight Win
DENVER – Led by a seven-goal performance from sophomore Wes Berg (Coquitlam, B.C.) the University of Denver men’s lacrosse team defeated the Penn Quakers 15-12 in front of 1,968 fans at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Berg’s seven goals tied DU’s Division I single-game record that is held by associate head coach Matt Brown. It was also Berg’s seventh career hat trick. Also turning in strong performances were senior Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.), who finished with two goals and a career-tying four assists for six points, and senior Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.), who record a career-high seven assists.

Holy Cross Men’s Lacrosse Posts Win Versus Sacred Heart, 11-9
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) posted three goals and two assists for five points as the Holy Cross men’s lacrosse team defeated Sacred Heart, 11-9, at Campus Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 0-3 overall.

Panthers fall late at Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The High Point University men’s lacrosse team fell at Jacksonville on Saturday, 9-8. HPU rallied to tie the game 8-8in the fourth quarter but the Dolphins scored with 24 seconds remaining in the game to get the win. Freshmen Dan Lomas and Michael Messenger each scored two goals for HPU.

“The guys fought hard to tie the game up late,” said head coach Jon Torpey. “Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to overcome the lapse we had in the third period. At this level you have to execute for all 60 minutes. We look forward to returning home to face Michigan on Wednesday.”

Lomas led the Panthers with four points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore Matt Thistle added one goal and two assists. He has scored in all six games this season. Sophomore Austin Geisler made 13 saves in the loss.

#16/17 Lehigh dominates VMI, 18-2
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The #16/17 Lehigh men’s lacrosse team bounced back from a tough Colorado road trip by downing VMI on Saturday afternoon, 18-2. Four different Mountain Hawks recorded hat tricks, including senior David DiMaria who had three goals and four assists for his third seven-point game of the season. Senior Chris Rinaldi also scored his first-career goal in the first quarter and turned that into a hat trick of his own. Senior goalie Griffin Farha was strong in stopping nine of 11 shots between the pipes while classmate Dan Carr came in to stop both shots sent his way over the final minutes.

Titans Fall in Chilly Home Opener Saturday to Quinnipiac
DETROIT (3/2/2013) — Junior Alex Maini (Lynbrook, N.Y. / Lynbrook) led the University of Detroit Mercy men’s lacrosse team with a career-high seven points, tallying a career-best five goals and two assists in the home opener at Titan Field on Saturday, but UDM fell 12-10 to the Quinnipiac Bobcats.

Mellynchuk’s Overtime Goals Lifts Brown Laxers Over #5 UMass, 9-8
Amherst, Mass. – Junior midfielder Dan Mellynchuk’s (West Sayville, NY) second goal of the game with 2:31 remaining in overtime rallied the Brown men’s lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over fifth-ranked UMass at Garber Field, sending the Minutemen to their first loss of the season.

The win evens Brown’s record at 1-1 overall on the young season, while UMass falls to 3-1.

Harvard Men’s Lacrosse Drops First Road Contest at Hofstra, 10-5
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Harvard men’s lacrosse team could not withstand a strong second-half surge by Hofstra on Saturday as the Pride earned a 10-5 victory over the Crimson.

Daniel Eipp and Devin Dwyer each recorded three points with a pair of goals and an assist apiece. Dwyer has now registered nine points over the last two games and is tied with Alex White, who scored his seventh goal of the season on Saturday, for the team lead in points at 10. Peter Schwartz and Pat Fiorvanti were both credited with one assist.

Harry Krieger made nine saves in goal as Hofstra (3-1) won 12-of-17 face offs. The Pride also capitalized on 3-of-6 extra-man opportunities while Harvard (1-2) went 0-for-4 on the day. The Crimson was able to control possession for much of the first half and outshot Hofstra 39-31 for the game, but put just 11 shots on goal against 19 for the Pride.

Runkel Saves 11 In 8-6 Win Over Bellarmine To Open ECAC Play
BALTIMORE – Jack Runkel made a kick save on a low, hard shot by Bellarmine University’s Brogan Hill just 71 seconds into play Saturday afternoon, sparking the Loyola University Maryland defense, and the junior goalkeeper finished with a season-high 11 saves as the Greyhounds defeated the Knights, 8-6, to open ECAC Lacrosse League action at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Yale Beats Albany 15-8
ALBANY, N.Y. – The Yale men’s lacrosse team stepped up in its second game of the season to bring down the ranked Albany Great Danes 15-8 and move its record to 1-1. After coming off a tough season-opening loss against St. John’s last week, the Bulldogs improved on what they needed to – finishing their shots and holding on to possessions to win in a decisive fashion.

No. 6 UVa drops Overtime Classic at No. 18 Syracuse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – True to form of the Virginia-Syracuse series, it took overtime to decide the 29th all-time meeting, as the No. 6 Cavaliers (4-1) lost for the first time this season, falling inside the Carrier Dome on Friday night to the No. 18 Orange (2-1), 9-8.

Mick Parks won the faceoff to start the overtime period, his 16th win in 21 attempts on the night. Matt White attempted a shot, but the shot was saved by Syracuse goalie Bobby Wardwell, starting the Orange offensive possession.

After a timeout, Dylan Donahue found Kevin Rice who slipped the ball past UVa goalie Dan Marino with 1:00 left in the first overtime. The shot threaded the needle to send Syracuse to the thrilling win. It’s the first overtime loss for Virginia since falling to Johns Hopkins at Klöckner Stadium last season.
