Bocklet Tallies Six Goals to Help No. 1 UVa Cruise to Victory

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Chris Bocklet tied a career high with six goals to pace the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (4-0) to a 17-5 triumph over the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers (1-1) on Tuesday afternoon, inside Waldron Family Stadium. Bocklet has reached six goals now three times in his career. UVa is now 10-0 all-time in the series with Mount St. Mary’s and Bocklet’s six goals are the most any Cavalier has posted against the Mountaineers.

“I thought it was a good win for us,” said Virginia men’s lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia. “I thought it demonstrated a little toughness on our part to come on the road in the middle of the week between [games against] Stony Brook and Syracuse and play well today. I did think we played well – this is a step in the right direction for us and we can build off the win as we look forward to the weekend.”

Bocklet fittingly started the scoring 1:56 into the game on an Owen Van Arsdale pass. After The Mount tied the game at the 10:47 mark in the first quarter on a Daniel Stranix unassisted goal, UVa tallied nine-straight goals, storming out to a 10-1 lead. During the run Bocklet scored four more goals, giving him five in the first half. Rob Emery and Steele Stanwick each netted two goals apiece and Ryan Tucker deposited one goal during the streak.

Brett Schmidt scored with 1:18 left in the second quarter, halting UVa’s run. Colin Briggs netted a goal with 50 seconds remaining in the half, sending UVa into the intermission with an 11-2 advantage.

The Cavaliers outscored the Mount 6-3 in the second half behind Tucker’s second and third goals of the game, his first career hat trick. Pat Glading tallied his first collegiate goal, while Matt and Mark Cockerton scored in the same game for the fourth time in their careers, giving UVa eight different players who netted goals in the game.

Virginia won the shots battle (42-31), ground balls (38-21) and faceoffs (17-9). Mick Parks was stellar at the faceoff X, winning 13-of-19, while Chris Clements picked up a team-high five ground balls. Rob Fortunato saved six shots and allowed three goals, picking up his fourth win of the season in between the pipes.

The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday afternoon when No. 3 Syracuse invades Klöckner Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN in HD. Faceoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
