Coach Berkman Makes History as Sea Gulls Fly Past Eagles

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. – Salisbury University men’s lacrosse head coach Jim Berkman went where no men’s lacrosse coach has gone before with Wednesday’s 16-8 win over Capital Athletic Conference foe the University of Mary Washington. He became the first head coach in any division of collegiate mens’ NCAA lacrosse to notch his 400th career win as the No. 1 Sea Gulls took down the Eagles.

In the win, senior attackman Matt Cannone moved his name further up the record books; with six points on two goals and four assists in the game, the Bayport, N.Y., native moved up to No. 2 in Salisbury lacrosse history with 306 career points behind Jason Coffman’s program-leading 451 points.

Cannone scored the first goal of the game to give the Gulls an early 1-0 lead, but Mary Washington quickly followed with a goal to tie the contest, 1-1. Senior attackman Erik Krum netted his first score to regain the lead; Krum led the Sea Gulls with seven points and six goals for the game.

Eagles’ attackman John Bohlinger, who led his squad with three goals, tied the game again with his first before Krum ripped off two goals in 24 seconds to give Salisbury a 4-2 lead heading into the second period.

Salisbury dominated the second quarter on the scoreboard despite winning only 2-of-7 faceoffs. But the Gulls converted all five clear attempts in the quarter which led to the team outscoring the Eagles 5-1 in the period.

Senior midfielder Sam Bradman and Krum both had two scores in the quarter while Cannone added the other.

The Sea Gulls took over at the face-off X in the second half; winning 10-of-13 faceoffs and were a perfect 9-for-9 on clear attempts. The team was successful on all 20 clears for the game.

Senior attackman Lantz Carter led the team in the third period with two goals. Senior midfielder Jeff McGuire and senior attackman Kyle Quist both added goals, as well, to increase the Gulls’ lead to 13-6 at the end of the quarter.

Salisbury added three more goals in the fourth off of the sticks of Krum, Bradman and senior attackman Tony Mendes to finish out the game.

Sophmore goalkeeper Alex Taylor played the entire game in the cage and made 11 saves on the way to the win.

The Sea Gulls will be in action again on Saturday as CAC opponent Hood College comes to Sea Gull Stadium. The game is set for 1 p.m., with a ceremony to recognize Berkman’s historic win, scheduled for just before faceoff.
