Coast Guard Academy Takes Down Southern Connecticut State University

New London, Conn. – The United States Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse team hosted the Southern Connecticut State University Owls this afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field and cruised to a 20-3 win. The game was designated as a home game for SCSU, but was changed at the last minute after inclement weather flooded the Owl’s home field. Coast Guard got big contributions from 2/c Steven Danseglio (4 goals/1 assist – Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip), 2/c Austin English (7 assists -Stevensville, Md./Kent Island), 3/c Paul Dellisola (4 goals/1 assist – Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) and 3/c E.J. Schmid (5 goals – Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville), but had twelve players register at least a point on the stat sheet. With the win, the Bears moved to 1-0 on the season and in conference play.

Coast Guard came out firing, opening up an eventual 4-1 lead late in the first quarter. Initiating the scoring was sophomore attackman 3/c Paul Dellisola with the first of his four goals on the afternoon. Southern Connecticut immediately countered putting one in the back of the net to knot things up at 1-1. 1/c Nick Zablotny (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) got in on the scoring next on a nice assist from 2/c Steve Danseglio to make it 2-1. Coast Guard retained possession on the next two face-offs and English fed Dellisola on duplicate draw-and-dump plays from x to make it 4-1 to end the quarter.

The Bears opened up the second quarter on the offensive as Danseglio sandwiched two nice dodge and shoot goals around a similar Zablotny effort to make it 7-1. English was in a particularly giving mood today and passed out his fourth and fifth assists of the afternoon to 3/c Stuart Carley (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor) and 3/c E.J. Schmid for a 9-1 lead heading into halftime.

Danseglio opened the second half scoring with a “worm burner” to the lower corner of the goal off an assist from Carley before Dellisola notched his fourth and final goal for an 11-1 lead. 3/c E.J. Schmid turned on the jets in front of the visiting Schmid clan and scored the next four goals including two extra-man opportunities – the last off English’s seventh and final assist on the day to start the fourth quarter at 15-1.

After a Southern Connecticut goal, 1/c Dan Symanski (Vienna, Va./Madison) won the draw and Danseglio scored on another quality dodge-and-shoot move from the right alley for his fourth goal of the day. 2/c Jay Lord (Simsbury, Conn./Westminster) scored off the subsequent face-off on a nice dodge-and-dump feed from 1/c Justin Ryan (Phoenix, Ariz./Bernards). Next, two newcomers were involved in two of the most attractive goals of the game. Cadet 4/c Steve Reynolds (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) dodged from the top to free himself before firing a great pass that 4/c Sam Krakower (Lumberton, N.J./ Rancocas Valley Regional) caught in mid-air and deposited in the back of the net for his first college goal for the navy and orange. Reynolds delivered again on an almost identical set-up to Krakower to make it 19-2. The Owls scored off the next faceoff, before Cadet 4/c Kyle Carpenter (Evergreen, Colo./Conifer) scored his first collegiate goal off a nice feed from Zablotny and the Bears walked away with a 20-3 decision.

Head Coach LCDR Brian Krautler was very pleased with the fact that the Bears offense shared the ball (14 of the 20 goals were assisted), but wants to see better shooting and shot selection as areas for improvement for overall team offense. He also praised the ground ball and defensive work of long poles and Team Captains 1/c Andrew Breen (7 ground balls – Falls Church, Va./George Mason ) and 2/c Tim Wyderko (9 ground balls/1 assist -West Bloomfield, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary’s).

The Bears will now travel to West Palm Beach, Florida over Spring Break to face Palm Beach Atlantic University, #15 Elon University, Emory University and #4 Grand Valley State University in the 2012 Sailfish Shootout from 2-6 March 2012 – see the Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse website below for specific dates and times (note that Monday is the off day for the Bears).
