Dover, Del. (June 25. 2012) — Six home games and six road contests, including a visit to Virginia Tech, highlight the Delaware State University women’s lacrosse schedule for the team’s inaugural season in 2013.

The Hornets will play their historic opener on Feb. 16, 2013 at Wagner College in New York. DSU will compete at home for the first time on Feb. 22 against Detroit Mercy at Alumni Stadium.

Delaware State will also host Liberty (Mar. 1), St. Bonaventure (Mar. 10), Howard (Mar. 15), Colgate (Apr. 6) and in-state rival Wilmington University (Apr. 23) during its inaugural season.

The Hornets’ season-one road schedule is also highlighted by a visit to Virginia Tech on April 13. The Atlantic Coast Conference Hokies were 10-7 in 2012, and listed No. 38 in the LAXPower.com ranking of the 92 NCAA Div. I women’s lacrosse teams this past season.

“Our inaugural schedule will be challenging because we are a first year program competing against established teams,” said Delaware State head women’s lacrosse coach Jillian Lontz. “We’re working hard to build a competitive team for our first season. I’m looking forward to the challenge of competing with the teams on our 2013 schedule.”

Delaware State will play as a NCAA Div. I independent in its first season.

Six players, including two junior college transfers, have accepted scholarship offers from the Hornets. Lontz says others may be offered scholarships during the current signing period, which runs till August; and during a signing period in November.

Delaware State has also invited more than a dozen current DSU students to try out for the team during the fall 2012 exhibition season.
