Drexel Men’s Lacrosse Announces 2012 Schedule

Philadelphia, Pa.— A season-opener against Virginia and a visit from Notre Dame highlight the 2012 Drexel men’s lacrosse schedule. The Dragons will face six teams that made the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Four of those games will be played at Vidas Field.

Drexel’s non-conference schedule will be one of the most difficult in the nation. Drexel has four non-league home games at Vidas, three of which are against teams that finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally. The Dragons open the season on Feb. 18 against the University of Virginia. The Cavaliers won the 2011 national championship. Drexel will also face Notre Dame at home on March 3 and Bucknell on March 13. The Fighting Irish advanced to the quarterfinals a year ago, while the Bison took Virginia to overtime in the first round of the NCAA Championship a year ago. The Dragons only other non-conference home game is against St. John’s on the final weekend of the season. Drexel will play road games at Villanova, another NCAA team from a year ago, as well as Albany, Bryant and Mount St. Mary’s. Overall, the Dragons will face seven teams that ended the 2011 season ranked in the top 20.

The Colonial Athletic Association schedule opens with a road game at Saint Joseph’s on March 6 and resumes a few weeks later when Drexel faces Hofstra at home on March 24. The Dragons will also host Penn State and UMass in CAA play, while visiting Towson and Delaware.

Coach Brian Voelker is in his third season at Drexel. He has an 18-11 record in his two seasons in University City. The Dragons return all but one starter from last season’s team which finished 8-6 overall.
