Game Highlights: Roanoke Lacrosse Falls to Lynchburg, 13-12

SALEM — Max Voumard scored with just over a minute remaining in overtime to down Roanoke, 13-12 in front of a capacity crowd at Kerr Stadium Saturday night. The Maroons slips to 4-3 overall, 0-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. The Hornets record improves to 7-1, 1-0 in conference games.

Playing in front of a capacity crowd of over 1,500 fans, the atmosphere was electric for the ODAC-opener for both teams. The weather was perfect for a night lacrosse game to appease the Roanoke faithful in the top-15 showdown between the two rivals.

Lynchburg, ranked #6 in the country, knocked off #13 Roanoke for the first time in four years. The Hornets, who have won their sixth-straight contest, snapped a five-game skid against the Maroons. Roanoke still holds a commanding 33-7 series advantage.

Both teams totaled 48 shots each, while the Hornets held the advantage in groundballs, 49-40 and won 18-of-28 face-offs. The Maroons defense forced 22 turnovers and was successful in 21-of-22 clear attempts.

The Maroons took control early with a 3-1 lead after 17-minutes of action. Penalties by both Jeff Keating and Kyle Smith gave Lynchburg a man-up opportunity. The Hornets capitalized three times over that span to take their first lead of the game, 4-3 with 6:30 to go in the first half.

Joey Coretti scored two-minutes later to tie the score before two late LC goals gave the visitors a 6-4 halftime lead.

The Maroons opened the second half with five unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead eight minutes in the third quarter. Richard Lachlan opened the scoring with a man-up goal 19-second in and again a minute later to start the run. Spencer Parsons, Coretti and Brayen Gerrie scored the next three goals to give the Maroons momentum.

Lynchburg responded quickly, scoring four of the next five goals to end the third quarter with the score tied 10-10.

The lead changed hands once again in the ODAC thriller as Drew Bracken found Brendan Nizolek for his only goal of the game and give RC a 11-10 lead with 11:15 to go. After a Hornet goal a few seconds later tied the game, the Maroons took the lead once more off a Mike Hayden goal from Conner DuBois with just under seven-minutes remaining.

Down 12-11 with 5:50 left in regulation, Voumard scored his second goal of the night to force the extra period. He scored his third goal of the game on his eighth shot of the night as he found twine to lift the Hornets to their third win against a ranked opponent this season.

Lachlan and Coretti led Roanoke with three goals and one assist apiece. Gerrie came up big for the Maroons, as the long pole defenseman scored twice for the first multi-goal game of his career. His six groundballs were a team-best. Max Satossky won 8-of-19 face-offs and scooped up six groundballs.

The Hornets leading scorer Dylan Hoff led his team with three goals and an assist while Pat Ohrem totaled two goals and two assists. Andrew Wilfong had a team-high 12 shots, scoring twice with an assist and collected four groundballs.

Matt Jernack won 18-of-27 face-offs and collected 12 groundballs for LC. Joe Lisicky collected seven groundballs and caused a team-high three turnovers.

Franc Cook had nine saves for Lynchburg in the victory. Charles Pease took the loss in goal for Roanoke with six saves. Mike Hardon added seven saves in relief.

The men will return to action on the road Saturday, March 24 as they travel to Farmville to play against Hampden-Sydney in ODAC action. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
