Grip ‘N Rip: Davey Emala, Boston Cannons

Baltimore native and Boston Cannons attackman Davey Emala shows off the stick he used to take the MLL by storm, leading the Cannons with 33 goals and second on the team with 38 points and capturing the MLL Brine Most Improved Player Award. Before being selected 23rd overall by the Charlotte Hounds in the 2014 Supplemental draft and being traded to Boston, Davey graduated from the UNC in 2013 after transferring from Georgetown after his sophomore season. He finished his college career with 77 goals and 104 points and a Second Team All-Big East honoree.

What head and shaft are you using?

I use the STX Surgeon head and SC-TI shaft.  I have always used STX products and especially like using this stick.  It is very light, while still being solid and consistent.

Do you string your own sticks? If not, who does?

I string my own sticks.  I started in college and like being able to adjust my own stick.

What kind of pocket are you using?

  • Mesh – ECD Red Striker Mesh.
  • Pocket placement – I use a mid to high pocket for a quick release and good amount of hold. At the same time the ball can sit lower in order to carry.
  • Shooters – I use two shooters that sit pretty high.  I don’t rely on them too much for hold. I think the pocket should control the ball more.
  • Whip – I would say I use a medium to low amount of whip. It goes back to having a higher pocket so there has to be a balance.

How do you tape your sticks?

I use tape at the end of the shaft and then wrap it up about halfway.  I used to mess around with different styles of tape a lot more then I do now.  I put a little electric tape on there so you can transition your hands easier.  I learned this trick from #27 Kevin Buchanan, it is becoming popular with a lot of Cannons players.

You had to adjust to the 2013 NCAA shooting string rule, how did you go about it? Was it a hassle?

It was not to difficult for me because my stick was already similar to the new rules.  I have never really used a “V” in my stick consistently.

Any superstitions or funny stories?

Nothing too crazy, I just try to have a routine that I like on each game-day and keep it consistent.  It will usually be something like getting to the stadium, eating something small, playing wall-ball, and stretching out all before warm-ups.  That way you can just go relax and play.

Chipotle or Qdoba?
