Grip ‘N Rip: Kevin Crowley, New England Black Wolves

British Columbia Native and New England Black Wolves forward Kevin Crowley shows of his gnarly gear he will be using this season. Kevin graduated from Stoney Brook University in 2011 as the all time leader in points with 223 points (131 goals, 92 assists) and a unanimous America-East Player of the Year selection. He was selected first over all in both the 2011 NLL and MLL drafts here he has been a stellar contributor in both leagues including winning the 2013 MLL MVP Award and amassing 267 points in 64 NLL games. Kevin has also dominated in the international game, getting five goals against the United States in the gold medal game at the FIL World Championship.

Do you string your own sticks? If not, who does?

I used to string my own sticks but now I have my buddy Desi Gonzales string them up for me. He’s a lot better at it than I am. He gets them perfect the first time whereas when I do it, it usually takes two or three times. Ain’t nobody got time for them!

What kind of pocket are you using?

  • Mesh: Semi Hard
  • Pocket placement: Middle
  • Shooters: Three across the top
  • Whip: Minimal

Why do you like this set up?

This set up allows me to the ball out of my stick quickly and also helps me hang on to the ball when I am getting checked.

How do you tape your sticks?

Just from the bottom about a foot up

How does your box set up differ from your field set up?

It doesn’t really, my game doesn’t change too much from box to field so I try to keep it consistent for both leagues.

How has your stick changed from college to now?

It hasn’t changed much other than in college I used a little bit lower of a pocket than I do now.

Any superstitions or funny stories?

Playing U-15 field lacrosse in the Provincials, my bottom string came undone. I went to pick the ball up over and over and it kept falling out. I had no idea what was going on. Luckily, the other team didn’t score on my turn over.

What gloves/helmet/pads are you using for the NLL?

I use the Under Armour Engage glove. It’s custom New England Black Wolves design so it looks really sharp and is super comfortable. My arm pads, shoulder pads, and rib pads are all from the Under Armour Corruption series.

What is your favorite kind of Poptart?

Never been a big Pop Tart guy! But Pillsbury Pizza Pops — those are my jam!
