Each week Lacrosse Playground will be featuring a different lacrosse athlete as part of our “Grip ‘N Rip” series, where we’ll find out what the best use to fine tune their game. This week we are featuring Cornell’s Max Feely. This stud was extremely underrated going into college, but soon got on everyone’s radar after Cornell’s championship run in ’09.
What head do you use?
What handle do you use?
Where does your pocket sit/what type of pocket do you prefer?
I like my pocket higher up, but not too deep. I hate playing with a bag. The higher pocket makes it easier to get groundballs because the ball goes right into the pocket.
Who is your stick doctor? Do you string it yourself or have a go-to-teammate/friend?
I don’t touch my stick. I can barely string a shooting string. My fellow defenseman Andy MacDonald is my go to stick Dr. He strings them up, does all the maintenance, pretty much does everything for me.
What kind of mesh do you use (Hard, soft, traditional/leathers, marc , etc.)? Why?
I use the STX’s dura/hard mesh (not really sure what it’s called). I just like that I can use it in pretty much all conditions and it doesn’t get messed up. Especially playing in upstate NY we see some pretty nasty conditions so I like the durability of the mesh. Also makes it so I don’t need to get my stick restrung too often.
What is your preferred glove?
This year we’re using the K-18 gloves, but I actually preferred the gloves we had the last two years, the G-22’s. The G-22’s fit looser than the K-18’s, which i prefer.
How much whip does your stick have?
My stick has almost no whip. I don’t really carry the ball too often or throw sick fakes so I don’t need any whip.
Anything unique you do to your head or shaft (pocket up-keep, tape jobs, alterations, etc.)?
I don’t do too much with my stick. I like to throw a little tape on the butt. Also, after I play in any wet conditions I put a ball in the pocket so it doesn’t lose its shape.
How long do you keep a stick before you get a new one?
I keep my sticks for as long as I can because I hate breaking in a new stick. I played the entire playoffs last season with a cracked head…
What’s most important to you in a stick/what makes a good stick?
For me I want a stick that’s going to throw well. Also, I like strong heads and shafts. If I break my head then Andy has to string me up a new stick… not trying to be a pain. I tend to bend my shafts a lot which is annoying, but I can always trade it in and get a fresh one, so it’s not too big a deal.
