Hartford Lacrosse’s ‘Stache for the Cash

The University of Hartford Lacrosse team will play in the Catamount Classic Lacrosse for a Cure tournament for the second straight year. The tournament, hosted by University of Vermont, raises money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. To raise money, Hartford Lacrosse is sporting mustaches in their ‘Stache for the Cash.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – For the second-straight season, University of Hartford men’s lacrosse coach Peter Lawrence has announced that the Hawks will be taking part in the fourth annual Catamount Classic – Lacrosse for a Cure on October 9. All proceeds from the event will be donated to testicular cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The fourth annual Catamount Classic – Lacrosse for a Cure, will be held on Sunday, October 9 at Thayer Academy’s off- campus turf fields in Braintree, Mass. This year the Catamount Classic will host two Division I college lacrosse tournaments in one day, kicking off with the women’s division at 8:00 a.m. and continuing with the men’s division at 11:00 a.m. Joining the Hawks and host-team Catamounts for the 2011 annual event are Massachusetts, Bryant, Providence, Holy Cross, Brown and Sacred Heart.

Hartford is slated to play two full-length scrimmages with 15 minute running quarters. The Hawks will first take on Bryant at 11:30 a.m. before facing Providence at 3:30 p.m.

The Hartford lacrosse team is again putting a spin on the event in its efforts to raise additional money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Each player and member of the coaching staff is currently partaking in “Stache for Cash,” a fundraising initiative in which every Hawk grows a mustache and maintains it until the Catamount Classic. To donate to “Stache for Cash,” please fill out the donation form and mail to coach Lawrence at [email protected]. “Stache for Cash” tee-shirts will be distributed to the first 100 people who make a donation greater than $20.

In 2007, a member of the Vermont lacrosse team was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Following surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, he was able to start for the lacrosse team that spring. Although he was treated in Vermont, the player followed a treatment plan from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and is in full remission. Vermont head coach Ryan Curtis and his wife Kelly, who worked at the Institute, collaborated with the men’s lacrosse team and started the Catamount Classic – Lacrosse for a Cure in 2008.

In its inaugural year in 2008, the Catamount Classic raised nearly $20,000 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and last year, the event netted nearly $36,000 for the foundation making the three year total nearly $100,000.
