Inaugural Pacific Coast Shootout to Pit Men’s Lacrosse Teams of Notre Dame and Denver March 8, 2014 at Orange Coast College

Newport Beach, Calif. – The inaugural Pacific Coast Shootout, featuring the men’s lacrosse teams from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Denver, will be played on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at noon (PT) at LeBard Stadium on the campus of Orange Coast College.

The Fighting Irish (11-5 in 2013) enter the 2014 campaign after reaching the quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship, only to suffer a dramatic 12-11 loss at the hands of the eventual national champions, the Duke Blue Devils. The Pioneers (14-5 in 2013), meanwhile, saw their 2013 campaign end in the national semifinals with a 9-8 loss to the Syracuse Orangemen. Notre Dame leads the all-time series between the schools, 14-3, including dramatic, overtime victories in both 2012 and 2013.

Notre Dame will be making its third regular-season appearance in Southern California and first since a 9-7 victory against North Carolina at The Home Depot Center in Carson during the 2005 season.

“We are thrilled to be playing in Southern California again this spring,” said Notre Dame Head Coach Kevin Corrigan. “The Pacific Coast Shootout will be a great experience for all our guys, particularly the California kids on our roster. If the great Notre Dame/Denver games of the past few years are any indication, California lacrosse fans are in for a real treat.”

Denver, meanwhile, returns to California for the second time, having met Harvard in the San Francisco Fall Classic in 2011.

“We are extremely excited to be a part of the inaugural Pacific Coast Shootout, especially against such a great opponent as Notre Dame,” said Denver Coach Bill Tierney. “Each year, more and more western lacrosse players are appearing on Division I rosters, and California has become a hot-bed for that growth. The Denver Pioneers look forward with great anticipation, to the opportunity for us to demonstrate to the Pacific Coast area, what college lacrosse at its finest can be like for young players, their families, and our west coast fans.”

The afternoon will conclude with a 3 pm contest between the Loyola Marymount Lions and the UCSB Gauchos.

“It’s no secret. West Coast lacrosse is booming,” said the event’s Executive Director, G.W. Mix. “Each year, more and more players from California are appearing on the rosters of traditional college lacrosse powerhouses. The ultimate goal of the Shootout is to promote the high quality of lacrosse being played in California and the West, while exposing these developing players and programs to the best collegiate programs in the game. With this match-up between Denver and Notre Dame we are well on our way.”

Tickets for the inaugural Pacific Coast Shootout cost $35.00 for Reserved Sections and $25.00 for General Admission and are currently on sale at pclaxshootout.com.
