Interview: String It Up Lacrosse

LPG had the pleasure of interviewing one the premiere stringing/restringing companies in the industry, Sting It Up. String It Up is dedicated and committed to stringing professional top quality pockets for all lacrosse players worldwide. Every head is custom strung with the finest quality performing products in the market. Co-Owner, Leyland Davis, took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions.

How did you get started?
Growing up on Long Island we always have been around lacrosse and started stringing sticks at an early age. Tweaking sticks for teammates, or creating money pockets for ourselves we knew we had something going. Now with the right support and growing fan base we hope to become the premier stringing company in the lacrosse industry.

Who is behind String It Up?
String It Up is a 2 man operation, with many little laxers asking for jobs. Hopefully one day we will be accepting resumes, but for now we do all the arts and crafts.

Is there a certain pocket you love to string?
Stringing the 6-string traditional would have to be one of our favorites. It may seem like a basic “trad” at first, but it is old school mixed with new. The twist makes the pocket perfectly symmetrical and the “6” strings consist of 4 leathers and 2 vertical nylons. This formation makes the best traditional diamond pattern sidewall to sidewall.

What is the most popular pocket request?
Besides stringing the standard all white dura-mesh, the next most popular request has to be the monster mesh corner pocket. This pocket gets a lot of attention for the floating mesh and crazy color combinations that can be created.

Whats the turnaround time? Does it vary pocket to pocket?

Turn around time is crucial. We know that players need their sticks. Every head received from our website is strung up and shipped out within 1-3 business days.

The more advanced pockets take a little extra care, but every head is strung as soon as it arrives. We string mesh, monster mesh, and goalie heads at tournaments. During most tournaments there’s not much time in between games so having our techniques mastered is important. Customer service is what we are about, so the sooner that pocket is scoring goals the better.

What makes your stringing stand out above other stringing companies?
All of our pockets are neat and professional, clean cut and all with out taking away from how it functions. We make sure every head is trimmed properly and works as good as it looks. Every stick we string is tested and is game ready from the day you receive it.

Does the head matter?
The head doesn’t matter; we can string any pocket style in any head that is out there. We also offer Women’s stringing which will be available on our website soon.

Are there position specific pockets?
We can string any pocket style to certain specifications depending on the player’s preferences and or position. All pockets can be used for any position but some may function better then another depending on the player’s style. Attackmen usually like a low pocket to carry the ball, but that is not always the case. If a player is unsure we will string each pocket so the ball sets in the center of the head for excellent all around play.

Do you dye heads?
We do dye heads, new and used. Each dye job gets careful preparation to match a player or a team’s idea. Send us your logo or ideas and we will make it happen. Dying will be offered on our website shortly as well.

Looking around your site…You guys do a lot more than just string wands, right?
That’s right we do it all. We offer team apparel with a wide variety of brands and style’s to choose from, including our own line of apparel. Every team out there has different ideas so we put packages together based on preferences and budget. We make some really nice gear and make the process easy for any team. In addition to team deals we also offer stringing packages. Players can get their heads strung for as low as $15.

Where do you see your company this time next year?
In the next year we see our selves traveling to tournaments, camps, clinics and spreading the word. We hope to have the reputation of stringing the best heads in the game and have some of the major lacrosse companies offer our stringing service.

How long does it take to string the Eagles Nest? That joint is tight!
Thanks, this pocket sure does turn some heads. Creating and mastering the pocket did take some time. Each head has to be approached with a plan based on the stringing holes, once we have the plan set it takes about 2 hours. The greatest thing is that stringing it may look a mess but the final product is always amazing. The Eagles Nest throws perfect every time and has a feel unlike any other pocket out there.
