Kyle Harrison Hosts Lacrosse Camps In Harlem

On Saturday and Sunday, top pro lacrosse player Kyle Harrison (in partnership with Nike, Powerade and STX Lacrosse) hosted lacrosse camps at Harlem’s St. Nicholas Park for 100 kids, ages ranging from 8 to 15. The purpose was to expose lacrosse to inner-city youth in NYC and to inform them of the many scholarship opportunities available through the sport. It’s a unique event featuring a special individual in the world of lacrosse, Harrison. Lacrosse Playground was at the event Saturday.

We found out about the event from ESPN contributor, Jared Zwerling. Zwerling felt compelled to help out as much as he possibly could to ensure a positive future for the Harlem youngsters. Kyle Harrison also found the event to be important.

The kids were so excited to see Kyle Harrison, a person of color, show them how to cradle, catch, scoop and pass. Over the course of three hours Harrison ran drills and fun games on the basketball court hardtop. By the end of the day it was evident the budding lacrosse players did not want to see him leave.

Here is some background on Kyle: Kyle Harrison is a professional lacrosse player on the LXM PRO Tour. He was on the U.S. national team, and the first pick in the 2005 Major League Lacrosse draft by the former New Jersey Pride after an impressive collegiate career at Johns Hopkins University, where he was a three-time All-American — twice earning First-Team accolades. Kyle earned the McLaughlin Award as the nation’s top collegiate midfielder in 2004 and 2005 and received the Tewaaraton Award, given to the National Player of the Year after leading the Blue Jays to the 2005 NCAA championship. He was also named the USILA Player of the Year following his senior campaign. Overall, while at Johns Hopkins, Kyle led them to a remarkable 55-6 record and their first national title in 18 years. Kyle was recently named to Twenty Influential Black Figures in Lacrosse History by Lax Magazine.

Happy camper!

We look forward to attending the next event as this was a sure hit! View photos from the event on our Facebook Page.

More than 10 years and millions of visits later, Lacrosse Playground has relaunched with a focus on storytelling. Our mission is to provide comprehensive coverage of the latest lacrosse news, share insights into the sports betting and fantasy lacrosse world and showcase the lifestyles and personalities of the sport of lacrosse through articles, videos and podcasts.
