RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men’s lacrosse team didn’t let eight day break from game competition affect its play, as the Cavaliers topped No. 16 Union College 12-8 today at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The nonconference improves the Blue and White to 4-3 on the season.
The No. 13 Blue and White got a balanced scoring effort today, as six players found the back of the net. Sophomore Damian Sobieski led the club with a season high five points on three goals and a pair of assists. Junior Corey Elmer and fellow sophomore Anthony DiSanzo matched Sobieski with three goals each.
The Cavaliers’ offense was clicking from the opening whistle as the Blue and White built an early lead. Sobieski opened the score book just over four minutes into play with an unassisted tally. Just over two minutes later, fellow sophomore Ethan Heisman doubled the lead with his 10th goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Cabrini extended its lead to 4-0 as shots by Sobieski and DiSanzo found the back of the net. A Union goal with just under four minutes to play in the opening quarter gave the Blue and White a 4-1 advantage after 15 minutes.
The Dutchmen found their touch in the second quarter, scoring the first three goals of the period to tie the score at four with 8:37 to play in the half. Twelve seconds later, Elmer returned the lead to the Cavaliers with his first of the day. Union against tied the score with three minutes to play, sending the clubs into halftime tied at 5-5.
Less than 80 second into the second half, sophomore Mike Leyden put the Blue and White ahead 6-5 with his eighth goal of the season. Union tied the score for the third time at the 10:49 mark , but senior Bobby Thorp’s 117th career goal gave Cabrini the lead for good with 7:15 to play in the third quarter.
Cabrini sealed the game with a solid final period, outscoring Union 5-2. DiSanzo’s second goal of the afternoon came less than three minutes into the quarter on an unassisted goal. With just under nine minutes to play, Sobieski found Elmer for the junior’s 15th of the season.
DiSanzo completed his hat trick with just south of four minutes to play when he converted a Mike Leyden pass into a 10-6 Cabrini lead. Union responded 24 seconds later with a fast break goal, creeping to within 10-7. Elmer’s man down unassisted goal, his 16th of the year returned the Blue and White cushion to four goals.
Union again had an answer, cutting into its deficit with just under two minutes remaining on the clock. Sobieski closed the game as he started it, with an unassisted goal with 29 seconds to play, sealing the victory.
Sophomore Anthony DiNenno and senior Tyler Grau led the club with six ground balls each, while the senior also forced a pair of Union turnovers. Freshman goaltender Chris Treat improved to 2-1 on the season, recording seven saves in net for the Blue and White.
Sophomore Richard Gregory and junior Nate Greenberg tallied two goals each to lead Union (3-2). Senior Nolan Connors added a goal and an assist. Sophomore net minder Stefan Basile posted 11 saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will hit the road this week as it visits No. 18 Ithaca College (5-1) on Friday. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Ithaca’s Higgins Stadium.
