Loyola Quartet Named 2012 Men’s Lacrosse Captains

BALTIMORE – Graduate student Eric Lusby (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park H.S.), Seniors J.P. Dalton (Queenstown, Md./St. Mary’s H.S.) and Dylan Grimm (Oakton, Va./Oakton H.S.) and junior Scott Ratliff (Marietta, Ga./George Walton H.S.) have been named the Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse team captains for the 2012 season, Head Coach Charley Toomey announced today.

“We have four outstanding young men who have been leaders throughout their time at Loyola, and we are looking forward to them leading us into the 2012 season as captains,” Toomey said. “With Eric being a fifth-year player who is a graduate student, J.P and Dylan coming from our current senior class, and Ratliff as a junior, we have three classes represented. I think that demonstrates first that we have great leadership throughout our team, but also that we are a close knit unit, no matter how many years you have been with the program.

Lusby will return to the field in 2012 after playing in just two games last year. He suffered a knee injury in the 2010 NCAA First Round game at Cornell after earning All-ECAC First Team honors as a midfielder that season. The native of Severna Park, Md., scored 20 goals and assisted on five as a junior in 2010 and has played in 44 games throughout his four years at Loyola. He received a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA and retained his fourth-year of athletic eligibility following the injury.

Dalton was a member of the Greyhounds’ second midfield unit in 2011 and has also seen time as a face-off midfielder over the last three seasons. Last year, Dalton won 17-of-32 (.531) restarts and had six ground balls for Loyola. Dalton, who is from Queenstown, Md., was the Greyhounds’ primary man at the X against Air Force, winning a career-high 10 out of 16 attempts. He has scored three goals and assisted on one during his Loyola career.

Grimm stepped in as a starter on defense last season and caused 11 turnovers while picking up 22 ground balls. He was a mainstay on the unit that allowed an average of 8.15 goals per game in 2011. Grimm, who hails from Oakton, Va., started all 13 games on defense after playing in the same number as a sophomore.

Ratliff has emerged as one of the nation’s top long-stick midfielders in his first two seasons at Loyola. As a sophomore in 2011, the Marietta, Ga., led the Greyhounds in caused turnovers with 17. Ratliff also was third on the squad with 37 ground balls and played excellent defense on the unit as well.

The Greyhounds take the field for a fall ball tournament tomorrow at Ridley Athletic Complex. Loyola will take on Stony Brook at 1 o’clock and Siena at 3:30 on Awalt Field, the main competition field. Villanova will play Siena at 1, and Stony Brook at 3:30, on Lugano Field.
