Madalon Promoted to Men’s Lacrosse Associate Head Coach

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology Director of Athletics Russell Rogers (Branchburg, N.J.) announced the promotion of Matt Madalon (Hoboken, N.J.) to Associate Head Coach of the men’s lacrosse program after spending the past four years as an assistant.

Over the past four seasons, Madalon has helped guide the Ducks to an overall record of 45-21, including a program record-tying 16 victories in 2011. In 2011 alone, Stevens posted the most consecutive victories (12), most goals scored (312), goals per game (16.42), shots (1,035), shots per game (54.5) and shots on goal (577). The 16.42 goals also ranked second in Division III.

“This is a tremendous honor and I need to thank our Director of Athletics Russell Rogers and Head Coach Gene Peluso for giving me this opportunity,” said Madalon. “I am extremely fortunate to be part of the Stevens athletic community and I am looking forward to the new challenges and continued growth.”

The Ducks have reached postseason play two of the four years since Madalon stepped foot on Castle Point, including a trip to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship last season. In the upcoming 2012 season, Madalon will primarily work with the team’s offense and goalkeepers.

Head Coach Gene Peluso (Branchburg, N.J.) acknowledges the fact that Madalon has been key to the success of the Ducks over the past four seasons, stating “Matt has been an integral part of our success over the last few years, and I am proud that he has earned this promotion. Matt’s dedication to the program and the knowledge he brings makes him very deserving of this title.”

“Matt works hard at recruiting, brings great energy to the field every day and our players respect him,” Peluso added. “He motivates our players to compete at a very high level on the field and in the classroom. He has built many relationships with people in the Stevens community and is a great ambassador of the university and Stevens men’s lacrosse.”

As a student-athlete, Madalon began his career at Division I Hofstra University before transferring to Roanoke College where he competed in his final three seasons. While at Roanoke, he led the Maroons to a pair of NCAA semifinal appearances and was a two-time second-team All-American. In 2005, Madalon was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Madalon’s name can be seen all over the career and single-season record books at Roanoke. He ranks second all-time in wins with 35, third in saves per game at 11.79, fourth with a 9.09 goals against average and fifth with 604 saves. He twice won 15 games in 2005 and 2006, which are the third most, while his 237 saves in 2005 as the second-best in school history.

Madalon earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Roanoke in 2006 and was drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 Major League Lacrosse supplemental draft by the San Francisco Dragons in 2007. He played one season with the Dragons before moving onto the Long Island Lizards, where he recently completed his fourth season as a goalkeeper.

“Again, I am truly honored that coach Peluso and our Director of Athletics, (Russell) Rogers, have thought of me in this light,” Madalon concluded. “I am eagerly awaiting the start of the 2012 season.”

The Ducks begin their season on February 22nd when they play host to United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7 p.m.
