Marist Men’s Lacrosse Names 2012 Captains

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s lacrosse team has named their captains for the upcoming 2012 season. Head Coach Keegan Wilkinson has announced that seniors Kevin Defranco (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Chris Harren (Wilmington, N.C.) will lead the team for a second straight season, joined by redshirt junior Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.).

Defranco has appeared in 32 games in his three years at Marist as a long-stick midfielder, including 15 games and 11 starts in 2011. Last season he was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 22 for his effort at #17 Delaware in the Red Foxes’ season opener in which he caused five turnovers and collected three ground balls. He was tied for second on the team with 16 caused turnovers and scooped up 24 ground balls. Defranco was a nominee for the MAAC Long-Stick Midfielder of the Year award

Harren has seen action in 10 games in a Red Fox uniform, including seeing time in eight contests in his sophomore season as a midfielder. He contributed at both short stick and long stick defensive midfield positions in 2011.

Guarini had 21 goals in his freshman season in 2009, playing in 13 games and making 12 starts. He missed all of 2010 with an injury and contributed in five games during the 2011 season. A great student, Guarini has twice been named to the MAAC All-Academic Team.

The Red Foxes open their 2012 season Feb. 25 at Sacred Heart. The first home game will take place in the fifth game of the year when MAAC-opponent Jacksonville comes to Tenney Stadium. Marist will be looking to make the postseason for the third consecutive year as they will host the 2012 MAAC Championships May 4-6.

“Our team did a fantastic job in selecting its captains for this upcoming season,” Wilkinson said. “These three seniors, along with their fellow upper classmen, did a fantastic job of leading the team throughout the course of the fall semester. We demanded a lot from our players this fall and their commitment to success in the classroom, on the field, and in the community was clearly evident. As a staff, we are very proud of the team and know that these three will do a great job once practice starts.”
