Maryland Lacrosse Heads to Georgetown for Friday Night Lights

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men’s lacrosse team opens the 2012 season on Friday night at 7 p.m. at home under the lights at Multi-Sport Field against No. 7 Maryland (1-0, 0-0 ACC). It will be the seventh time in eight years that the Hoyas will open the season with the Terps.

Friday’s game will also be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Booker Corrigan calling the play-by-play and Ryan Boyle providing analysis. The game will also be available in audio on – www.GUHoyas.com – with Chuck Timanus calling the action.

Head Coach Dave Urick leads the Hoyas for his 23rd season on the Hilltop, having accumulated 216 victories at Georgetown and 338 during his legendary 32 year career, to remain the winningest active coach in Division I college lacrosse. Urick and the Hoyas will enter the season in unfamiliar territory, beginning unranked in either of the major polls and selected fourth in the BIG EAST, having lost six starters, including three to Major League Lacrosse, from a year ago.

For the Hoyas, there are plenty of reasons for optimism, including leading returning scorer, junior attack Travis Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta [Canada]/The Hill Academy), who scored 30 goals last season to earn a spot on the All BIG EAST Second Team. Comeau, who was a preseason all-league selection for the second consecutive year was also named to the Tewaaraton Watch List last week. Comeau will be joined at attack by junior Zac Guy (Tully, N.Y./Tully), who started and had a goal and an assist in the Hoyas first game against Jacksonville last season, before losing the rest of the season to injury. Junior Jason McFadden (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) will join a unit that could feature a pair of freshmen in Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) and Reilly O’Connor (Brooklin, Ontario [Canada]/The Hill Academy).

Senior midfielder Zack Angel (Park Hall, Md./St. Mary’s Ryken), a preseason All BIG EAST selection, posted 15 goals last season and enters 2012 in the best health of his college career. He will be joined by junior Brian Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep), the Hoyas second returning leading scorer (12 goals, 8 assists in 2011) and senior Francis McDonough (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) on the blue line. Junior Dan McKinney (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) will likely be joined by sophomore Jeff Fountain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./St. Paul’s School for Boys) and freshman Joe Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) on the Hoyas Gray line.
The Hoyas will feature experience on defense, with senior captain Gerry Reilly (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Xavier) , an eighth round Major League Lacrosse (MLL) draft pick (63rd overall), helping the unit reload.

Junior Chris Nourse (Erieville, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) is the squad’s top close defender, having picked up 36 ground balls and caused 35 turnovers in 2011. Nourse was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List last week. Senior Bobby Boyle (Rumson, N.J./Lawrenceville School) and junior Brennan Bicknese (Ridgewood, N.J./Delbarton) also bring experience in front of either senior captain CT Fisher (Chevy Chase, Md./Landon) or sophomore Jake Haley (Graysonville, Md./Queen Anne’s County) in goal.

Georgetown will send senior Brian Tabb (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) to face-off against Maryland All-American Curtis Holmes, who won 19-of-20 draws in the Terps’ 12-6 win over Hartford last Saturday. Tabb is tied for third in program history in face-off wins with 329.

The Hoyas and Terps meet for the 12th time in the history of the program’s, with Maryland holding a 9-2 edge. Georgetown has won two of the last five matchups between the schools.

MARYLAND: Maryland won its season-opener against Hartford last Saturday, 12-6, as Holmes won 19-of-20 from the face-off X. John Haus scored two goals and had two assists, as nine different Terps scored goals. Maryland is coached by John Tillman, who is in his second season in College Park. Tillman helped lead Maryland to the NCAA Championship game during his first season. Tillman is 1-2 lifetime against Georgetown, with his two losses coming while he was the Head Coach at Harvard.
