WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –– With 1:10 remaining in overtime, junior attackman Dominic Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) netted the game winner to give Palm Beach Atlantic (6-0) a 16-15 win over Kennesaw State. The Owls (1-7) never led in the game, but answered when it mattered, scoring the equalizer with 0:02 remaining to force overtime.
The Sailfish started fast with goals in the first minute, both just thirteen seconds apart from Dave Schultz (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) and freshman LSM Thomas East (Mabelton, Ga./Whitefield Academy). Goals from Scalzo, senior Joe Ciringione (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun), and senior Ryan Talks (Palm Beach, Fla./St. Andrew’s) gave PBA a 6-1 lead late in the first quarter.
Following a four goal Kennesaw State run, Palm Beach Atlantic got back on the board at 7:34 thanks to a goal from sophomore Dan Barry (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro), assisted by Scalzo. Both teams traded goals before Ciringione found Scalzo to make the score 8-6, a score which held until halftime. In total, the Ciringione-to-Scalzo connection found the back of the net four times.
In the third quarter, all three goals came from Scalzo, contributing to his final tally of seven goals and two assists. A pair of Bobby Hantske (Annapolis, Md./Southern) goals brought the lead to its’ biggest margin, five goals. Two KSU goals brought the score closer before a 16-yard shot and goal from junior Colin Price (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock); the score was now 15-12.
Trailing by two with under one minute remaining, Kennesaw State scored at 0:24 and 0:02 to send the game into sudden-victory overtime.
Following an initial save by KSU keeper Trey Koons, the Owls possessed the ball before a great save by PBA senior Cory Ender (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley). On the clear, midfielder Abel Cartwright (Stuart, Fla./Jupiter Christian) sprinted downfield and assisted Scalzo on the overtime winner, sending the PBA bench onto the field and the Sailfish home as a winner.
