Team owners, and the Wilkes-Barre community joined together to unveil the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Shamrocks name and logos on Thursday at the Woodlands Inn & Resort. The Shamrocks name draws on the area’s Irish background and culture.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Shamrocks also unveiled their primary and secondary logos, which will be used on team jerseys, merchandise, and other promotional material. The logos draw on the colors of the national flag of Ireland, furthering the Irish connection between the community and the team.
The team will begin play in January of 2012 at the Mohegan Sun Arena, a 9,500-seat facility that also serves as the home of the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
“The Shamrocks logo draws its inspiration from the local Irish heritage,” said the logo’s designer, Chris Lochinski. “The colors are based in the Irish tradition while not being stereotypical, the central shield design is based on a modified version of ancient shield of arm from Ireland, and lastly the central clover design melds the shape of the lacrosse stick into the classic symbol of Irish pride; the clover.”
The owners and attendees of the announcement were joined by Bagpiper Jim Sweeney, members of the Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, and Hazleton Chambers of Commerce, and the Luzerne County Commissioners.
“It’s more than announcing a team name,” said team President and owner Jim Jennings. “We are celebrating the people and the culture of the area. This is their team, and therefore the name has to reflect the people. There is no better way to make this announcement than with an all out Irish celebration.”
