NYC tops Hudson Valley to capture Empire State Cup

SYRACUSE, NY — New York City topped previously undefeated Hudson Valley, 10-8, to win the 2012 Empire State Cup lacrosse event at Central Square Stadium. The game was tied 3-3 in the first half, but New York City pulled away with four straight goals and never looked back. Michael Rastivo, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, led all scorers in the gold medal game with three goals and one assist.

In the bronze medal game, Connor Fields’ overtime game-winner lifted Western past Long Island, 7-6. Western led 5-0 early in the game, before Long Island mounted a furious comeback that fell just short. Western’s John Januszkiewicz led the tournament in goals, assists and points.

In the fifth place game, Gale Thorpe set tournament scoring records with a six goal, five assist performance, to lead Central to a 14-6 win over Adirondack.
