Paul Rabil had two goals, including a game-changing two-point goal, and an assist in the 2012 regular season finale last Saturday in Ohio, giving him the new MLL single-season points record of 72. He surpassed the 71 that John Grant, Jr. scored in 2007.
With the most points ever scored in a single MLL season, Rabil also won his second consecutive season scoring title – he tied Ned Crotty with 50 points last year. There was no competition this year, however. At number two, Brendan Mundorf recorded 59 points for Denver, 13 fewer than Rabil. Rabil has led the Cannons in points for four of his five seasons with the Cannons since joining the team in 2008.
But Rabil isn’t the only Cannon at the top of the scoring lists this season. In fact, Boston controls the table.
Matt Poskay led the league with 38 goals, the most he’s scored in a season aside from 2010, when he set the Cannons single-season goals record with 45. Poskay has had the most goals on the Cannons in four of the last five seasons.
With six, five, and four assists in the last three games, respectively, Ryan Boyle snuck past Rabil for the assists title, totaling a career-high 39 for the season (Rabil finished with 38). Boyle crushed the MLL all-time assists record, reaching 236 at the end of 2012. The previous record was 211, set by former Cannon Conor Gill. Boyle has led the Cannons in assists in all four of his seasons in Boston.
Boyle also tied his career-high with 58 points this season (he also did it with Philadelphia in 2007). This year’s 58 give him 395 total points – good for second all-time after Casey Powell, who has 399.
Kevin Buchanan is also in the mix following a career season for the versatile midfielder/attackman. With 31 goals, one two-point goal, and 10 assists for 42 points, Buchanan was third in goals and 7th in points this year.
Impressive numbers following a up-and-down season for the defending MLL champions. But the team’s only focus now is winning two more games, one and a time, in less than two weeks.
