#RememberMike

The Old Dominion University men’s team entered the NCLL back in 2009 lead by Michael Dailey and Scott Scheetz. Mike was recently in remission from a previously being diagnosed, where he had radical right side neck resection, removal of his right ear canal, plus a part of his skull. Mike had lost total hearing in his right ear. He fought on that season but as a coach, losing a lot of weight but still putting in a great effort. At the beginning of the Spring season Mike Dailey was diagnosed with Stage 3 Melanoma. Mike saw it best to seek a clinical trial at the UVA Cancer Research Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. However Mike did not make it through the treatment and passed away on July 12th of 2009 at 27 years of age. The loss really took a toll on our team and Mike’s friends and family. Several of our current players still think about Mike every day because he taught us a lot in the very short time we spent with him. We thought that we needed to find a day to memorialize Mike and also raise money for a good cause.

On March 31st of 2012, the Old Dominion Men’s Lacrosse team will be hosting the “Mike Dailey Memorial Invitational” with Christopher Newport University and Longwood University at Powhatan field in Norfolk, Virginia. Face-off will be at 1:30 PM, starting with Old Dominion vs. Christopher Newport followed by Longwood vs. Christopher Newport and finally Old Dominion vs. Longwood. This event will be completely free, however we are asking a $5 suggested donation at the door to benefit the UVA Cancer Center Melanoma Clinical Trials, where Mike spent his last months. Additionally ‘Remember Mike’ and Old Dominion Lacrosse shirts for sale for $10 with all proceeds going to the Center. Concessions will be made available and we are looking for some more sponsors or supporters to help make this event even more memorable. We have a Facebook event with more an address and more specific detail here: http://www.facebook.com/events/255059151238572/. Old Dominion Men’s lacrosse would like to invite all to come and support our team, this great cause and the Dailey family and to also to remember Mike as he would have wanted, with a day of fun and lacrosse.

If anyone would like to contribute, volunteer, sponsor or even help out at this event please contact Ian Donat at [email protected].

Lacrosse Playground

In 2009, Adam O’Neill, Harry Alford and Thomas Alford launched Lacrosse Playground as the preeminent site for lacrosse gearheads. For years Lacrosse Playground provided lacrosse fans with tutorials and tips on how to string a lacrosse head, up-close looks at the gear the top players used and sneak peeks at equipment and uniforms before they were released. More than 10 years and millions of visits later, Lacrosse Playground has relaunched with a focus on storytelling. Our mission is to provide comprehensive coverage of the latest lacrosse news, share insights into the sports betting and fantasy lacrosse world and showcase the lifestyles and personalities of the sport of lacrosse through articles, videos and podcasts.

So very proud to know all that have been touched by Michael Andrew Dailey aka “The Spike!”!  Honored as his Uncle to attend and meet all of his brothers and sisters from ODU and fellow Sportsman from Christopher Newport and Longwood Universities!  Thank you all!
