Starsia Announces 2014 Recruiting Class

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia announced the signing of 10 student-athletes to national letters of intent for the 2014-15 academic year.


Joining the Cavaliers next fall are: Tyler Breen (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Townsend Brown (Annandale, Va.), Chase Campbell (Baltimore, Md.), Mike D’Amario (Schenectady, N.Y.), Jack Falk (Washington, D.C.), Cooper Fersen (Dorset, Vt.), Cory Harris (Fairfax, Va.), Scott Hooper (Wakefield, R.I.), Will Railey (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Will Sipperly (Falmouth, Maine).

“It is my pleasure to introduce the Virginia Lacrosse Class of 2018,” said Starsia. “This group is skilled at the offensive end, and physical and athletic coming out of the defensive end.  Our recruiting continues to reflect the growth in the game and emphasizes multi-sport, well-rounded athletes.  A number of these young men will help us early in their playing careers and I am confident they will make a significant contribution to the UVa community, on and off the field.  Fans of Virginia Lacrosse will enjoy getting to know these young men.”  

Breen is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound attackman from Shrewsbury, Mass. Considered to be among the nation’s top attackmen in the class, Breen played in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Underclass Lacrosse Tournament and is ranked No. 24 onInside Lacrosse’s list of 2013 Top 50 Young Gun Senior Rankings. A 2012 and 2013 Under Armour All-Star, Breen scored 20 goals and nine assists for 29 points as junior in 2013, following up a sophomore campaign of 24 goals and eight assists at Taft School in Watertown, Conn. Breen also plays soccer and hockey at Taft.

Brown is a 6-foot-2, 170-pound attackman/midfielder from Annandale, Va.  A first-line midfielder as a freshman on Georgetown Prep’s nationally ranked IAC championship team, Brown was a member of the 2009 and 2010 US Lacrosse U-15 National Championship teams with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He played in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Underclass Lacrosse Tournament and teamed up with fellow UVa signee Will Railey to help Georgetown Prep to the 2013 IAC regular season championship. Georgetown Prep is the alma mater of former UVa players Danny Glading, Drew Jordan, Bray Malphrus and current Cavalier Pat Glading. 

Campbell is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound defenseman from Baltimore, Md. The Gilman School student-athlete owns three varsity letters in lacrosse and was a 2013 Towson Times second team all-star. Plays club lacrosse with the Baltimore Crabs, where he hasn’t lost a game during his entire high school career, helping the team to three NSCLA championships. Owns three varsity letters in football where he was a team captain in 2013.  Helped Gilman football to the 2011 and 2012 MIAA A Conference championships.  Recorded 68 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles at outside linebacker. Campbell played high school football with current UVa football student-athlete Micah Kiser and played high school lacrosse with current UVa midfielder Ryan Tucker. Also plays basketball at Gilman.

D’Amario is a 5-foot-10, 170-pound attackman from Schenectady, N.Y. The Niskayuna High School student-athlete was a 2013 US Lacrosse All-America honoree after scoring 72 goals with 44 assists. D’Amario competed in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic Underclass Tournament after missing most of the 2012 season with an injury. D’Amario also participates in indoor track & field. His older brother Steve was an attackman at UMass and his older brother Alex plays lacrosse for Union.

Falk is a 6-foot, 185-pound midfielder from Washington D.C. He is No. 18 on Inside Lacrosse’s list of 2013 Top 50 Young Gun Senior Rankings and also was an Under Armour All-Star. The Landon School lacrosse star attends the same high school as former UVa All-Americans Ryan Curtis, Peter Lamade, Matt Ward and current UVa defenseman Michael Rhoads was a teammate of Falk’s when their squad won the the 2012 IAC championship. Falk also plays football at Landon and is currently a captain on its 2013 team. 

Fersen is a 6-foot-4, 190-pound defenseman from Dorset, Vermont. A 2012 and 2013 Under Armour All-Star, Fersen has covered the opponent’s top attackman since his freshman season in 2011 when he piled up 53 ground balls and dished out three assists. He also plays hockey for the Berkshire School.  

Harris is a 6-foot, 190-pound midfielder from Fairfax, Va. Harris was a 2013 Under Armour All-Star from Oakton High School. He is a defensive back and running back on the football team and a team captain this fall. He also plays basketball.

Hooper is a 6-foot, 180-pound defenseman from Wakefield, R.I. The Under Armour All-Star is the first player at The Hotchkiss School (Conn.) to ever be named a team captain as a junior.  Hooper, who also plays hockey at Hotchkiss, is No. 32 onInside Lacrosse’s list of 2013 Top 50 Young Gun Senior Rankings.


Railey is a 6-foot-2, 175-pound goalie from Chevy Case, Md. The second team all-state honoree, along with fellow UVa signee Townsend Brown, helped Georgetown Prep to the 2013 IAC regular season championship. Railey also plays basketball and soccer at Georgetown Prep.

Sipperly is a 6-foot, 190-pound midfielder from Falmouth, Maine. Sipperly scored 20 goals and dished out 15 assists as a junior at the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., also picking up 20 ground balls. As a sophomore at Falmouth High School,Sipperly scored 43 goals. His father, Bill, was an All-American lacrosse player at Hobart College and was on two NCAA DIII national championship teams. His uncle, Robert Sipperly, played lacrosse at Hobart with current UVa associate head coach Marc Van Arsdale.  Sipperly’s cousins Derek (Army), Trevor (Notre Dame) and Dan (currently at Bryant) all played college lacrosse.

Additional members to the recruiting class for the class of 2018 may be added in the spring.
