Starsia Named FieldTurf’s 2011 NCAA DI Coach of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE- Va. – Hall of Fame UVa head men’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia was named FieldTurf’s 2011 men’s NCAA DI Coach of the Year. The honor marks Starsia’s third win in the six-year history of the award and second in a row. Starsia also won the award in 2008.

“I am greatly appreciative to FieldTurf for having selected me for this award,” said Starsia. “It is a company known for quality work and this recognition reflects the effort of everyone associated with Virginia Lacrosse. This past 2011 season is now a special memory and FieldTurf remains a partner in those meaningful achievements.”

Starsia will enter his 20th season at Virginia in 2012 with 329 career victories, the most all-time at the Division I level, passing iconic coach Jack Emmer (326) with UVa’s 2011 NCAA Quarterfinal win against Cornell. His Cavalier squads have won four NCAA titles and reached Championship Weekend 13 times. He has won more games than any coach in the ACC and Virginia history, sporting a 228-72 (.760)record. In 19 seasons with Virginia, Starsia reached his 300th career game with the Cavaliers in 2011, fittingly it was the 2011 NCAA title game against Maryland at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium. UVa’s efforts helped garner Starsia an ESPY nomination for Best Coach.

Starisa has been named USILA’s National Coach of the Year three times (1985, 1991 & 2011), named the ACC Coach of the Year a record eight times (1995, ’96, ’99,’00, ’02, ’03, ’06, ’09).

Starsia and the Cavaliers open up the 2012 season on February 18 when UVa travels up to Philadelphia to contest the Drexel Dragons.
