Harlem Lacrosse & Leadership Team Headed to the University of Virginia

NEW YORK, March 5, 2013 — On March 7th, lacrosse-playing students from Harlem will be traveling to University of Virginia with the Harlem Lacrosse & Leadership (HLL) program for a two day, horizon-broadening on-campus stay. The thirty middle school students hail from P.S. / M.S. 149 – The Sojourner Truth School, whose new team is coached by Wyatt Melzer, a 2012 graduate of The University of Virginia and a member of the school’s 2011 National Championship-winning team. Friday evening, NBC Nightly News featured a segment with Inner City Lacrosse, an organization that facilitates the growth of lacrosse in communities where options to play are almost nonexistent. Michael Gary, the Founder, has always viewed lacrosse as a stepping stone to get kids to not only grow on the field, but also in the classroom. Harrison inspires on and off the field, whether it be his athleticism or his motivating words. This past weekend, Harrison hosted a lacrosse camp in Harlem. With the help of Nike Lacrosse, STX Lacrosse, Powerade, and more, Harrison was able to teach the basics to children ranging in age from 8-15. Kyle Harrison Hosts Lacrosse Camps In Harlem

On Saturday and Sunday, top pro lacrosse player Kyle Harrison (in partnership with Nike, Powerade and STX Lacrosse) hosted lacrosse camps at Harlem’s St. Nicholas Park for 100 kids, ages ranging from 8 to 15. The purpose was to expose lacrosse to inner-city youth in NYC and to inform them of the many scholarship opportunities available through the sport. Harlem Lacrosse Brings on New Full-time and Part-time Staff

HARLEM, NEW YORK CITY – Jake Klein, former assistant coach with the Frederick Douglass Academy Middle School and High School Varsity Lacrosse Teams, was hired this past spring as HLL’s first official , full-time Program Director. In addition to coaching the middle school program, Jake directs the academic mentoring services, coordinates work with Harlem Lacrosse and Leadership’s talented body of tutors, and manages the boarding school placement counseling services offered to about a dozen students by HLL.
