DELAND, Fla. – As one of the oldest team games played in America, it is only appropriate that the inaugural Stetson University women's lacrosse team will play its first match against a team of players representing some of the original founders of the sport. The schedule became clear to us today. Tomorrow we must beat the Dutch for the chance to play the Welsh once more, if we win both of these games we get 9th place. If we lose to the Dutch we play the Koreans, a fight for 11th place. This made our goal very clear - we must beat a team we have beaten to play a team who have beaten us, making both games perhaps harder mentally thanks to the history. Read More...
Today, was all about lifting team morale after yesterday's loss against the Welsh. With the team deflated and most of our minds clearly in the wrong place, we were taken out for an unconventional training session. Rather than running drills, we ran six-on-six for 1 or 2 hours, hacking pieces out of each other and generally letting some steam off - none of us were ready to think about walk-throughs. The weather helped, with the sun hot enough to allow just pinnies. We reminded ourselves that although we could now only finish 9th, if we won our next game we could face the Welsh again, motivation enough to get everyone's head back where it should be. Day 4: Game day. Early start to get in the right food before taping sticks, packing the white jerseys and heading down to the hotel foyer to meet for the walk over. Flag bearer Rory Halsey led us from the hotel to the changing rooms where the Germany Wales game was finishing up. As the U-19 games start up the teams are sporting new gear. The Iroquois National team in particular is wearing sleek, new CPX-R helmets. The lid displays Iroquois insignia across a Purple shell, Yellow chinstrap and a Black face mask embossed with Iroquois on the middle bar.
Three members of the Iroquois Lacrosse Program visited Arcata to host the inaugural lacrosse camp for area youth in Humboldt County, California. More than 70 children, ages 8-18, attended the two-day clinic and learned about "the fastest sport on two feet," and the history of the Native American game. Read More...
