Tampa Offense Ignites In Victory Over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C.. – The University of Tampa Spartans picked up their first victory of the season, as they defeated the Newberry College Wolves 17-7. The victory moves Tampa to 1-3, while Newberry falls to 0-3

The game started off in favor of the wolves, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game. After those first four goals, the Tampa defense kept the Newberry offense quite, as they did not score another goal for 46 minutes. In that span, the Tampa offense ignited, as they scored 12 unanswered goals spanning over two halves to take the lead for good.

Tampa had a trio of players that netted three goals, Mackenzie Perna scored her three goals on three shot, while Christina Burroughs and Amanda Voges scored their goals on five and eight shot respectively. In goal, Fresman Vala Molamusa picked up her first career victory as she racked up 10 saves on the night.

After Newberry scored their four goals, Tampa respond back with three goals in less than a two minute span. Burroughs and Shannon Sweeney scored the three goals for UT that got them back into the game. The Spartans would go into the break with a 9-4 leads.

The Spartans would pick up where they left off, as they scored the first three goals in the second half, to take a commanding 12-4 lead. The Wolves would score a goal with 13:41 to pull within seven, but that would be as close as they came, as Tampa scored the following three goals.

UT dominated in draw controls, as they won 22 out of the 26 attempts. Tampa was also near perfect in in clears as they were successful in 17 of 19 clear attempts. The Spartans were able to induce 25 turnovers, while picking up 31 ground balls.

Tampa will be back in action on March 4th, as they welcome in Wheeling Jesuit University. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
