Three possible tournament teams you aren’t thinking about

Yesterday we released our projected field for this year’s NCAA tournament. Here are three teams that could make it into the NCAA tournament as Automatic Qualifiers that few are talking about.

1. Drexel: The Dragons are a good squad, with an overall record of 11-3 and only one conference loss. They’ve beaten a top 20 Albany team and have scored double-figures in all but two games. While they lost 13-6 to Penn State earlier this month, and while Penn State is certainly the favorite, Drexel is capable of beating the Nittany Lions and earning an AQ bid.

2. Georgetown: Yes, you read this right. This is not the same Georgetown team that lost to Lafayette or dropped a six goal contest to Mt. St. Mary’s. Georgetown snuck its way into the Big East tournament by beating St. John’s in OT, but they also managed to hang with Notre Dame and Syracuse, dropping a two-goal contest to Notre Dame and a one-goal contest to Syracuse. First up, avenging their mid-season loss to Villanova.

3. Villanova: This may be the best sub-500 team in the country (OK, maybe Virginia is). Four of Villanova’s seven losses have been to top 15 RPI teams and the Wildcats have played the sixth toughest schedule in the land. They’ve also knocked off Syracuse, which is why they are the top seed in the Big East tournament. If Villanova comes to play this weekend, they could be dancing.
