Tierney Given Multi–Year Contract Extension

Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway announced today that Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney has agreed to a multi-year contract extension to continue his successful coaching career with the Pride.

“For the past seven years, Seth has been an exceptional coach and an outstanding representative of Hofstra University,” Hathaway said. “His teams qualified for a school-record four consecutive NCAA Championship appearances and five CAA Championship Tournaments while continuing to achieve our primary mission of graduating outstanding student-athletes. Off the field, he and his team provide a strong leadership presence in supporting many community and charitable endeavors. We are excited to have Seth continue to lead our lacrosse program as we work towards our goals of CAA Championships and NCAA Championship play.”

Tierney became the fifth head coach in the history of the Hofstra Men’s Lacrosse program in August 2006. Entering his eighth season in 2014, Tierney has led the Pride to 62 victories, the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association championship, the 2009 and 2011 CAA regular season titles and berths in four consecutive NCAA Championships from 2008 through 2011.

“I am truly grateful for the trust that has been given to me to continue to lead the Pride program by Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz and Jeff Hathaway,” Tierney stated. “Successful organizations have great leadership at the top and we have that here at Hofstra in President Rabinowitz and Jeff Hathaway. Their support is greatly appreciated as we continue to produce a quality, winning program that the University and the community can be proud of.”

Last season, the Pride possessed one of the top defenses in the country, ranking third in goals against average (7.79) and climbing as high as sixth in the national media rankings and seventh in the coaches rankings. Included were victories at second-ranked Notre Dame and 13th-ranked Fairfield during their 7-7 season. Hofstra had three USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game participants in John Antoniades, Cody Solaja and Adrian Sorichetti and classmate Mark Mullen was an All-CAA first team selection and was named to the USILA Scholar All-America Team. In addition, several young players have emerged as stars in All-CAA second team pick goalie Chris Selva, who ranked fourth in the nation in save percentage and fifth in goals against average, and CAA All-Rookie Team selections Sam Llinares, who led the team in assists and was tied for team-high honors in points.

Tierney, who served as an assistant coach at Hofstra from 1995 through 2000 before leaving for a similar position at his alma mater John Hopkins University, has seen 11 of his student-athletes earn All-American honors, 30 earn All-CAA honors, 14 earn CAA All-Rookie team honors and four earn USILA Scholar-Athlete All-America team honors since returning in 2007.

During his six-year tenure as an assistant with the Pride, Hofstra recorded six consecutive winning seasons with a combined overall record of 61-28 and a conference mark of 29-2, captured five league titles, received five top 15 final national rankings, and played in four NCAA Championship tournaments.

Tierney also coached seven All-Americans and nearly two-dozen all-conference players during his first tenure at Hofstra. Among them was midfielder Doug Shanahan, who would receive the inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy as College Lacrosse Player of the Year, the Lt. Ray Enners Award as the Division I Player of the Year, and the Lt. Donald McLaughlin Award as the Division I Midfielder of the Year in 2001.
