DETROIT (8/2/2012) — UDM has taken the responsibility of spreading lacrosse in the Motor City since the program first took the field in 2009 and this week was no different as the Titans and Think Detroit PAL collaborated on a lacrosse camp.

The three-day camp started on Tuesday and was held on the auxiliary grass playing fields on the James K. Campbell Complex. Members of the team and coaching staff were on hand for the event, helping teach the game of the lacrosse to kids that have never experienced the game before.

“It was great working with Think Detroit PAL and we all had a blast,” said Titan head coach Matt Holtz. “All the kids had a great time and the coaches and players that worked the camp were tremendous in helping the kids really learn a sport that they probably never saw before.”

In keeping with the Think PAL Detroit mission of building character in young people through athletic, academic, and leadership development programs, the Titan players and coaches were instrumental in laying the basic lacrosse skills for the kids to enjoy and ending with a scrimmage setting on Thursday.

The camp marked the third year that Think Detroit PAL offered an affordable lacrosse camp to girls and boys entering the 4th through 8th grades. Think Detroit PAL initiative was to provide children the opportunity to learn this fast-paced and fun sport from qualified lacrosse instructors. In addition to learning the fundamentals of the game, each participant received a t-shirt and their own lacrosse stick.

Think Detroit PAL is a non-profit organization positively impacting the lives of nearly 10,000 children each year through athletic, and leadership development programs. Formed through a merger of Think Detroit and the Detroit Police Athletic League in 2006, Think Detroit PAL has roots dating back to 1970.

Think Detroit PAL empowers the community by training volunteer coaches and by creating safe places for kids to play. Each year, Think Detroit PAL teaches more than 1,400 caring community members how to be encouraging and effective mentors. Think Detroit PAL has also renovated numerous parks and recreation centers across the city including Maheras-Gentry Park and St. Hedwig Park, transforming them into some of the city’s premier athletic facilities.
