Tom Slate, LaxEvo Founder, Named Head Coach of Denver Outlaws

DENVER — The Denver Outlaws announced today that General Manager and Head Coach Brian Reese will be shedding his coaching responsibilities. Reese will continue functioning as the team’s General Manager, and Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Tom Slate will be promoted to Head Coach. Reese steps down with a 32-17 (.653) record over three and a half seasons with the Outlaws. He led the team to four consecutive playoff berths and two championship game appearances. In 2009 Reese was also named MLL Coach of the Year.

“At this time, I think it’s most beneficial to the organization to split the Head Coaching and General Manager duties,” said Reese. “This will allow me to take a step back and concentrate more on other duties besides the on-field coaching.”

Slate brings 13 years of coaching experience to the helm, including head coach experience most recently with the San Francisco Dragons in 2007. He also served as assistant coach with the Philadelphia Barrage during their championship runs in 2006 and 2007. Slate just completed his first season on the sidelines with the Outlaws, and thanks to his guidance the team was able to carry the third-best defense in the league (allowing just 148 goals). Last summer Slate was also named Defensive Coordinator for the Philadelphia Wings in the National Lacrosse League.

“I’m excited to take the next step with the Denver Outlaws and accept the position of Head Coach,” said Slate. “The bar has been set pretty high in Denver. It’s great to be part of a professional organization like the Outlaws and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help lead this team.

“Tom will do an excellent job as Head Coach,” added Reese. “We share many of the same philosophies and work well together. Our goal, like every year, is to win a MLL championship. This structure will help get us there.”
