TOWSON, Md. – Senior Andrew Wascavage, juniors Thomas DeNapoli and John Paukovits and sophomore Rob Zoppo have been selected as the 2013 Towson men’s lacrosse team captains.
Head coach Shawn Nadelen said, “Towson Lacrosse will be in good hands this season with the selection of Thomas, John, Andrew and Robby as our captains. Each young man has earned the respect of their teammates and coaches and will help lead the Towson program towards achieving our goals as a team.”
Wascavage is a three-year letter winner in goal for the Tigers. In 2012, he started 13 of 15 games played, tallying 771:07. He made 159 saves and posted a goals against average of 9.57. Wascavage also picked up 29 groundballs and caused nine turnovers.
“I’m pretty excited and honored to be named captain,” said Wascavage. “It’s nice to know my teammates trust me to lead them. Our team goals are to win CAA games and the title, beat Hopkins and Loyola and go to the NCAAs. I’m looking forward to achieving these goals with the team.”
Paukovits enrolled at Towson in 2011 after seven years serving in the Army (served two tours of duty in Iraq). A midfielder, he saw action in four games last season.
“It’s great the team voted on the captains,” said Paukovits. ” Being chosen by my teammates lets me know they’re confident in me. I’m pretty excited they look to me to be a team leader.”
“There is a good mix of leadership styles, personalities and on-field experience among the four captains,” Nadelen continued. “I am excited to work closely with these young men to ensure the communication is consistent between the coaches and team and that our expectations as an elite Division I lacrosse program are being met.”
DeNapoli started all 15 games in 2012 and is the team’s returning leading scorer with 15g and 13a for 28p. He scored two man-up goals and scooped 13 groundballs.
“It’s a big honor to be named captain and get that type of respect from my teammates and coaches as a junior,” stated DeNapoli. “We’re focused on our goals and working toward them together.”
A sophomore, Zoppo won a gold medal with the US Men’s U-19 National Team in July 2012 at the World Games. He played in 14 games as a red-shirt freshman last season, scoring nine goals and adding two assists.
