University of Maryland Terps Upset By UMBC, 8-7

BALTIMORE – Junior John Haus scored twice and added an assist for the Terrapins, but UMBC scored five straight goals in the fourth quarter to upset the No. 4 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team, 8-7, Tuesday night at UMBC Stadium.

The loss drops Maryland to 3-1 on the season, while evening UMBC’s record at 2-2.

The Terps drew first blood less than two minutes in when senior Drew Snider scooped up a tough groundball off a rebound and found junior Owen Blye on the right side of the crease. Blye had enough time for multiple pump fakes before finishing past UMBC goalie Adam Cohen.

Maryland took a 2-0 lead at the 11:09 mark of the first when senior Michael Shakespeare dodged down the left wing and got to the front of the crease before scoring into the upper right corner.

Haus put the Terps up by three with 8:01 to go in the first with a quick shot on the right side of the crease after a slick re-dodge created some space from his defender.

UMBC got on the board, making it a 3-1 game, when Zach Linkous scored from the outside at the 3:01 mark.

Liknous scored his second of the game to open the scoring in the second quarter with 6:24 remaining.

But the Terps increased their lead to three going into halftime thanks to two unlikely goals.

A sloppy UMBC clear ended with Blye scooping up a groundball near the right wing and running to the crease. He patiently waited as Cohen back-peddled back to the goal, but Blye easily put one past the off-balance goalie at the 2:07 mark.

A pushing penalty gave UMBC an extra-man opportunity with 1:45 to go, but the Terps’ man-down unit turned the tables on the Retrievers. Sophomore Brian Cooper scooped up a groundball off of a blocked shot and took a hard shot as he turned around. From his back he still managed to hit junior Landon Carr in stride with an outlet pass and Carr raced the ball into the Maryland offensive zone. He moved the ball to Haus in the center of the box and he quickly found senior Joe Cummings on the left wing where he ripped a quick shot inside the near pipe for Maryland’s first man-down goal since Feb. 14, 2009.

UMBC got the first score of the third quarter on a goal by Derek Bertolini at the 8:30 mark, but Maryland pushed its lead back to three on goal by redshirt sophomore Mike Chanenchuk. He got past his defender with a re-dodge down the left alley and scored past Cohen inside the far pipe with 4:25 to go.
The Retrievers five-goal run in the fourth started with a Scott Hoppmann goal to make it a 6-4 game at the 11:19 mark.

UMBC then made it a one-goal game less than two minutes later when Conor Finch scored an unassisted goal.

A face-off violation call gave UMBC a break on the ensuing faceoff and Phil Poe scored to tie the game for the first time since it was 0-0 in the first quarter.

UMBC took its first lead of the game at 7-6 when Scott Jones scored with 6:43 left in the fourth. Jones scored again to make it a two-goal game, as the Retrievers took advantage of an extra-man opportunity at the 6:08 mark.

Haus scored an unassisted goal to make it a one-goal game with 1:31 to go and Maryland won the ensuing faceoff, but Cohen made his eighth save of the game on a shot by Blye from the left wing to preserve the Retriever lead.

Maryland had one final chance with under 30 seconds to go, but turned the ball over when the Terps had too many men on the field, giving UMBC the ball and the Retrievers ran out the clock.

Junior Jesse Bernhardt led the Terrapin defense with five caused turnovers and four groundballs.

Maryland returns to action on Saturday, March 10 when it hosts Marist at 1 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
