US Lacrosse First Stick Program Recipients

BALTIMORE – US Lacrosse today announced that 102 teams nationwide have been awarded development grants through the 2012 First Stick Program.

This national US Lacrosse initiative is designed to deliver comprehensive resources, equipment, US Lacrosse membership and training for coaches to awarded teams. The program is geared for new and developing youth and high school lacrosse teams nationwide.

First Stick Program grant recipients now begin a two-year partnership with US Lacrosse, during which time the national organization will help to develop a self-sustaining lacrosse program that operates by US Lacrosse’s national standards and best practices. One of the program’s primary goals is to help break down the barriers to participation by providing free and/or discounted resources to new teams.

“We’re excited that teams from all over the country, including some areas where lacrosse is just beginning to appear, are among this group of award recipients,” said Morgan Cook, manager of the US Lacrosse First Stick Program. “We look forward to getting to know each of these new teams and partnering in their development over the next two years.”

Applicant groups were required to demonstrate a financial need and verify their status as a community based youth team or organization, or an elementary, middle or high school team in order to be considered.

“We congratulate each of these recipients because there was a very rigorous application and selection process for the program,” said Billy Hook, director of programs at US Lacrosse. “The benefits of this program are all encompassing and provide all the tools necessary to help new teams become truly self-sustaining.”

All told, 66 boys’ teams and 36 girls’ teams comprise the 2012 First Stick Program award group. The full listing of recipient teams is included below.

Lacrosse Playground

In 2009, Adam O’Neill, Harry Alford and Thomas Alford launched Lacrosse Playground as the preeminent site for lacrosse gearheads. For years Lacrosse Playground provided lacrosse fans with tutorials and tips on how to string a lacrosse head, up-close looks at the gear the top players used and sneak peeks at equipment and uniforms before they were released. More than 10 years and millions of visits later, Lacrosse Playground has relaunched with a focus on storytelling. Our mission is to provide comprehensive coverage of the latest lacrosse news, share insights into the sports betting and fantasy lacrosse world and showcase the lifestyles and personalities of the sport of lacrosse through articles, videos and podcasts.
