US Lacrosse Releases How to Make Proper Contact in Men’s & Boys’ Lacrosse Online Course

BALTIMORE, Sept. 30, 2013 – US Lacrosse today released its new online instructional course, How to Make Proper Contact in Men’s & Boys’ Lacrosse, free of charge to all of its members.

After several years of development and collaboration with professionals in martial arts, gymnastics and other contact sports, US Lacrosse has developed the course to help reduce the number of injuries resulting from illegal and hard hits by teaching proper technique to deliver and receive contact in men’s and boys’ lacrosse.

The course, featuring host Sam Bradman (LXM Pro Tour), is an essential resource for coaches, players, parents and officials. It navigates the user through nine units of written and video instruction, graphs, drills and other US Lacrosse resources for members to use and refer to as often as needed. The units cover a range of topics including: what is making contact in lacrosse, age-appropriate contact, injuries and contact, receiving contact, making contact, and more.

“US Lacrosse wanted to provide a resource to the men’s lacrosse community to learn more about appropriate contact on the field of play,” said Chris Snyder, co-creator of the course, former US Lacrosse coaching education manager and current director of coaching education for the United States Olympic Committee. “We wanted to emphasize to coaches, players, parents, officials and even spectators that everyone has a role in teaching, performing or encouraging contact to be legal and fair at all times, because it is imperative to preserving the safety of players and the integrity of the game.”

“We are excited to roll out our seventh online course,” said Erin Smith, director of education and training at US Lacrosse. “This is a one-of-a-kind training that we want to get into the hands of coaches, players, and parents before they begin their season. It can also be highly informative for officials as well. We are fortunate that due to the generous support of our members and donors we are able to make this critical educational tool available to US Lacrosse members free of charge. Thanks also to Chris Snyder and Kenny Snyder for their vision of this project, as well as the countless other US Lacrosse volunteers who lent expertise and advice during the review process.”

Starting Feb. 1, 2014, the How to Make Proper Contact in Men’s and Boys’ Lacrosse course will be added to the requirements for men’s Level 1 certification in the US Lacrosse Coaching Education Program (CEP). However, it is recommended that the course be taken prior to that date and taken by everyone, and any coach who is already US Lacrosse CEP-certified.

The course is the most recent online course US Lacrosse has provided to all of its members free of cost. The four other free courses include: Men’s Fundamentals of Coaching (CEP Level 1 course), Women’s Fundamentals of Coaching (CEP Level 1 course), Men’s Game Officiating (Officials Education Program (OEP) Level 1 course) and Women’s Game Officiating (OEP Level 1 course). US Lacrosse also offers Level 2 men’s and women’s coaching courses for a small fee.
