VMI Lacrosse Shatters Own Wounded Warrior Project Record, Raises Over $6,700

LEXINGTON, Va. — Hosting a game to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project for a four straight year, the Virginia Military Institute men’s lacrosse team shattered the program’s previous mark for money raised for the Project, bringing in $6,750.30 during the April 14 contest at Drill Field #2.

Through T-shirt sales, raffle tickets for items such as gift cards up to $250, a GPS, lacrosse gear and an iPad, the program surpassed last season’s mark of $4,831.73 with the 2013 total. All proceeds benefitted the Wounded Warrior Project.

This season’s total was greatly aided by a donation from Betsy Alter, sister of VMI’s director of lacrosse operations and second classman, Eric Alter. Betsy, a doctorate of physical therapy student at nearby Lynchburg College, made custom gait belts. She raised and donated $950 dollars during a ceremony at halftime of the Keydets’ game against Mercer University.

In the four years the Keydets have sponsored a Wounded Warrior Project game, the team has raised $18,732.03, averaging $4,600 per season.

The Wounded Warrior Project’s vision is to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history. Its purpose is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, help injured service members aid and assist each other and provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.
