Despite a strong comeback in the four-quarter, including two goals by Senior and Bucknell commit Brock Ghelfi, the Broncos of Brophy Prep fell to St. Ignatius 6-8 in the final game of the Jerry Langkammerer Classic this past weekend. The matchup brought together two of the top teams in their respective states of California and Arizona and proved to be an exciting game. Senior Will Mckee (Lehigh) was a force to be reckoned with in the faceoff x for SI, going 15 of 18 on the day, while Ghelfi ended the game with four goals.

SI got out of the gate quickly with two goals from Junior Matt Emery (Virginia) including a man up step down shot that would have made Matt’s brother (Virginia midfielder Rob Emery) proud. The Wildcats showed their supremacy, dominating time of possession while making very little mistakes on either side of the field.

The Wildcats would add four more goals in the half, scored by Seniors Peter Doyle (Princeton), Philip Alimam (Kenyon), Juinor Spencer Evans (Harvard) and Sophomore Joe Lang, to go into the locker room with a 6-1 lead.

The Wildcat’s amazing ball handling skills were apparent throughout the first half while Brophy’s goalie, Sophomore Brad Nordstrom, held his own with nine saves despite a barrage of shots from the SI offense.

In the second half, after an SI goal by Lang, the Broncos broke their almost 30 minute scoreless streak on a man up goal by Ghelfi, his second of the game, to bring the score to 7-2 in favor of the Wildcats. The Broncos would add another goal, this time by Spencer Smith on a garbage play in front of the crease, to close the deficit to 4 at the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats would increase the lead on a goal by Yale-commit JW McGovern off a feed by Lang. But that’s when the scoring would stop for SI, as Brophy started its comeback with 7:50 left in the fourth quarter. Ghelfi and Smith would, together, score three goals in the last eight minutes to put the Broncos back into the game. But thanks to offensive stalling efforts and Scott’s four fourth quarter saves, the Wildcats held on for the win, securing their undefeated record at 16-0, while handing Brophy their fifth loss of the season.

Next up for both teams are two league matchups. Brophy Prep plays Red Mountain while St. Ignatius plays Sacred Heart Prep. Both games are to be played Monday April 16th.
